Do you think we'll ever be able to build our own laptops?

same way how we build our desktops... maybe the case for a laptop would just be a case with a monitor....

No. I think laptops and other small electronics in general will become less upgradeable, as they become smaller, cheaper, and more disposable.

It'd be nice...its basically the only thing that turns me off from laptops, they're not (very) upgradable.

doubtful... especially never anything cutting edge...

desktop parts are easy to swap to build yourself... most everything on laptops is resonably custom (ie. special made motherboards, etc)

I honestly don't even use desktops anymore. If I need a new computer, it will be a "desktop replacement" laptop with a 17-inch screen. Desktops are pointless to me, since I detoxed myself from the computer building obsession a while back, and am never looking back. What a waste of cash.

For those of you starting to wonder why you spend ridiculous amounts an heatsinks, case modding and all that - just think how much more satisfying an obsession it would be in an area where you can actually "enjoy" the improvements, rather than watching a benchmark program. Build audio amplifiers! Mod your audio/video sources! Much more fun.

you can now, but it uses desktop parts. They just use LOTS of battery power

Yeah I'm the same way. I do need to upgrade my desktop, but only because it really needs it (Celeron 1000!); not because I want to or really care to. Once it becomes the point where replacing laptops is no more costly than ocassionally upgrading a desktop I would buy one.

Can you put togather your own audio equipment? How and what?

IF we can, most won't be small and light because the small ones have to be very neat and organized and planned out very well, so they require different motherboard designs and such. It could be done, but the profit margins for the company selling the parts would be low. Also think about airflow, that's a major factor.

Yeah, you can! Head-fi.org has one of the nicest forums I've ever seen. People are so friendly and helpful, and there are people who offer PC boards and detailed instructions for assembling headphone amplifiers that are as of professional calibre. They range from simple "CMOY" amps to a full blown PPA. Both named after their creators.

I hope not in any massive capacity...

end-users that can't install RAM in a desktop are bad enough, even with all the room... imagine some soccer mom trying to put a new HDD in her laptop so that she has more space to download her kids pictures to... <shudder>

Why would you want to?

Doesn't seem likely unless a company pre-builds the parts for you, especially the moldings. But if they did that, why wouldn't they just build 'em themselves and sell it whole? Also the trend for laptops is for them to be smaller. It's pretty tough to get all the pieces together in small packages.

agreed. I haven't upgraded in ages and until I can afford to go (high-end) dual procs again, I won't (unless HL2 lives up to the hype).
