Do you think warez will last in the next 50 years? *with POLL*

No, I think that most if not all software will be open source/free/etc in 50 years from now. Heck, I could see it happening within the next 10.

50 years is a pretty long time. I would assume that software companies would figure out some magical way to force users to register on the internet, and not be able to patch up software to be able to get out of it.

You're forgetting about open source. It's not warez if it's free to begin with.

Yeah I forgot about that. There's a lot of smart people out there that wouldn't mind writing software in their free time.

I answered yes, but I don't agree with the second half of the answer. 🙂 The reason I think software will still be pirated 50 years from now is that I think software companies don't really care enough about all of the 15 year olds who pirate their software. They couldn't pay for it anyway, so why try to make them? I think software companies probably make the majority of their money from businesses, not individuals. Recent attempts to stop piracy seem to be directed at casual pirates who just borrow the CD from a friend or relative and may not even know that it is illegal, not the hardcore punks who pirate over the Internet and crack software.

It's just like music is right now. Once someone's tasted the free stuff, they don't want to pay for it ... as long as there's software that costs money, there'll be "free" versions of that software.

LMAO, I love the user name.

Anyway, warez isn't gonna go away. All my software used to be warez, however as I got older and employed all that changed.

I pay for half and steal half. Their has always been pirated since the days of DOS, the only thing making it more widespread is the internet and Kazaa. RIAA/MPAA just decided to do something about it.

GASP! You mean I'm actually going to pay for software after I get a job? Oh man oh man oh man ... 😉

And thanks about the name. My actual name is Tim, so TIM as an acronym seemed like an interesting idea. If you take a look at my rigs page (here), I've expanded the mustard them to the computer names ... too much time on my hands, perhaps? Oh well ... 😉

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA ROFL HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

open source

/wipes tear from eye.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Of course warez will exist in the future. However long you look into the future, as long as there are software companies producing software, I'm sure you can find at least one consumer that wants it but doesn't want to pay for it. I could imagine it waning and perhaps being more actively combated than it is right now, but completely disappearing? Very unlikely.

It goes like this, if there is a population of people that want something, they will figure out a way to get it. This goes with basically anything. Remember the prohibition? People still drank. Drugs? People still do drugs and smuggle it, even if its illegal. Software, will always have a way of being pirated. If it can be read, it can be copied. If there is a lock, there is a key. It is impossible to copy/pirate protect something unless it isn't usable in the first place.

There will always be people who don't want to pay or want to use it for their purposes which doesn't require them to buy a full copy for a few uses.
