Well thats the fastest system you can buy. If doom 3 is anything like star wars galaxies then it will take future hardware to run at highest res with all detail maxed out.

Get a different motherboard... but yeah, that thing will be a beast. It will overclock at a 1:1 ratio up to 3.7ghz... As long as you're goin' nuts, get PC4000 ram though.

No it won't run Doom3 with all the graphical eye candy turned up. While its a guess on my part I don't remember Quake3 running with full details max at 1024*768+ when it came out.

He'll be able to have the graphics quite high but I don't think he will be able to max it out completely - thought it'll look VERY nice since th engine is supposed to scale very well (it bell for my pc ;) )

Only the 20" Apple Cinema Display? :p. Kidding, but are the pixel response times on those LCD's good enough for games?

Nope, and it'll look goofy as hell with a PC too...

how come I can run Doom III buggy unoptimized Alpha at 1024 x 768 high detail mode on with 4x AA and 16x AF and it runs fine?

Because it doesn't have any of the complexities of the finished engine... It's merely a demo.

ok, i'm gonna share my thoughts on each component:

P4 3.2G(800FSB) - this is a stupid buy, the 2.8C is around $270 and even the 3.0 is $400, that means you save $430 and $300 respectively. the extra 400/200 mhz is not worth the extra $430/300. also, the 3.2's run really hot

ASUS P4C800E-Deluxe - do u really need the deluxe now?

Promise FastTrak S150 TX4 - doesnt the mobo do this?

Western Digital Raptor 36.7 GB*2 - one raptor as main drive and a western digital SE for storage drive. that way you get storage and speed

CORSAIR XMS3700(DDR466) 512MB*4 - 2 gigs of ram is overkill to run doom3

Sapphire RADEON 9800 Pro - good choice

Apple 20" Cinema Display - you can get a 19 inch LCD for a lot less

CREATIVE LABS Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Platinum - only get Platinum if you are gonna use the extra drive, personally, it isnt worth the extra $80 or so dollars to me

Yamaha TSS-1 Dolby Digital / DTS 6 Speaker Surround-

Thermaltake Xaser III - ewwwwwwwwwww :)

Sony DRX-500UL - good

Thanks for all of you ,thank you shady06! And all of your opinions are very important to my friend,Now he had changed the component like this:

CPU: P4 3.0C (Yes!I agreed! the extra 400/200 mhz is not worth the extra $430/300)

Mobo: ASUS P4C800E-Deluxe(Deluxe edition is the only choice if he want to use the Raid function)

Raid Card : Promise FastTrak S150 TX4 (cancelled)

Hard Drive: Western Digital Raptor 36.7 GB*2

Memory: CORSAIR XMS3700(DDR466) 512MB*4(He would like to use longhorn OS in the future,so I think 2 gigs RAM is necessary)

Vid Card: Sapphire RADEON 9800 Pro

Monitor : Sharp LL T1820-H - flat panel display - TFT - 18.1"(Yes,the response time of "apply cinema display" is not qualified for the fast Fps games)

Sound Card : CREATIVE LABS Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Platinum

Speaker : Yamaha TSS-1 Dolby Digital / DTS 6 Speaker Surround

Case : Thermaltake Xaser III

Optical Drive : Sony DRX-500UL

Keyboard : Microsoft NaturalKeyboard Pro

Mouse : Razer Boomslang 2100

Microsoft? SideWinder? Force Feedback Wheel USB

Microsoft? SideWinder? Force Feedback 2

Microsoft? SideWinder? Freestyle Pro

Why the hell is everyone trying to buy a machine for Doom 3 before the damn game comes out. Let me list some possibilities

1) what if it's not as demanding as everyone assumes? Just because Q3 owned systems when it came out doesn't mean Doom 3 will do the same.
2) What if it sucks? None of you have played the final version. What if it sucks as much as q3 did? Why put together a system for a game that you might not even be playing?
3) What if it's even more demanding than anyone currently thinks? You would have spent 1500+ dollars on a computer only to have it not running the way you want.

Conclusion: Wisen up and wait for Doom3 to hit shelves and be tested under a plethora of systems and reviewed before you buy a new system. Also consider; you're preparing to spend 1,500 dollars for a computer game. A COMPUTER GAME! If your current system would run it at 1024x768 at medium detail then you are insane and EXTREMELY SPOILED if you plan on upgrading just for a game.

Here's my take - Good luck. You might want to hold out though and wait for Prescott, or buy 2.4, 2.6, or 2.8 and replace later. You'll probably need a new board as well though, based on latest non-support for Prescot.

CPU: P4 3.0C (Yes!I agreed! the extra 400/200 mhz is not worth the extra $430/300) good choice - Prescott's coming in the fourth quarter though.

Mobo: ASUS P4C800E-Deluxe(Deluxe edition is the only choice if he want to use the Raid function) great choice - best ASUS board available - run the 2x Raptors as Raid 0 off the on board ICH5R - Intel Raid.

Raid Card : Promise FastTrak S150 TX4 (cancelled) You definitely don;t need this - the Asus also comes with a Promise 378 Raid controller that I run 1 WD SATA 250gb as 1+0 Raid/Archive/DAta

Hard Drive: Western Digital Raptor 36.7 GB*2 - good choice - I like the Raid 0 plus the extra space to partition 10 gig OS and the remaining 60GB for all progies. Add another drive - either PATA or SATA for backup/archive - etc.

Memory: CORSAIR XMS3700(DDR466) 512MB*4(He would like to use longhorn OS in the future,so I think 2 gigs RAM is necessary) I went with 1 GB of Kigston HyperX 3500, but for the latest and greatest performance right now, I would go for the DDR 500 - either OCZ or Kingston.

Vid Card: Sapphire RADEON 9800 Pro - Good choice, are you getting 128 or 256 pro? I went for 128, but for ultimate ganing machine you should consider 256, as well as looking at the NVIDIA 5900. Keep in mind that the ATI 9900 might be coming soon.

Monitor : Sharp LL T1820-H - flat panel display - TFT - 18.1"(Yes,the response time of "apply cinema display" is not qualified for the fast Fps games) I would stick with a good CRT - Sony F-520 or possibly a Mitsubishi 23". It's up to you, I debated long and hard on my choice, but actually I have an older Sony 21" F-500 for now.

Sound Card : CREATIVE LABS Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Platinum - Good choice, if you use the extra features - like midi, etc.

Speaker : Yamaha TSS-1 Dolby Digital / DTS 6 Speaker Surround - many good choices - your preference

Case : Thermaltake Xaser III - good case (big and loud), I prefer Coolermaster myself.

Optical Drive : Sony DRX-500UL - go for the DRU 510A - newer model - about the same price.

Keyboard : Microsoft NaturalKeyboard Pro - Good choice - prefernce choice again - I like the Logitech Cordless - that comes with the MX Duo

Mouse : Razer Boomslang 2100 - great mouse

Microsoft? SideWinder? Force Feedback Wheel USB - buy at retail, and try them out

Microsoft? SideWinder? Force Feedback 2 - buy at retail, and try them out

Microsoft? SideWinder? Freestyle Pro

Take what shady06 said to the next level regarding the cpu:
IMO, the 2.4C is the best P4 buy right now, it's much less expensive than the 3.2 et al, and will overclock well into 3 ghz territory.
I realize you're really not going .budget' on this rig ;), but I doubt you'll get much extra out of a 3.2 P4 (in terms of overclockability), particularly when compared to the slower-rated P4 Cs.

lol interesting point

what if doom sucks and nobody wants to play it heh

actually i never really liked doom II maybe because i had a crappy computer to run it on but IMO the level design/map system was simply horrid
fighting was ok but monotonous IMO i could only play through about 5 lvls before i couldnt take it anymore

i tried picking it up again playing it with a much faster system and still wasn't too impressed IMO i thought Wolfenstein 3d was just much funner because the levels where not so crazy and i think that was the only thing better about doom over
wolfenstein

i do think the games were revolutionary but not necessarily great maybe not even good

IMO great games are timeless and you can pick them up even 5-10 yrs later

i still find myself enjoying some nintendo/ SNES and Genesis classics just as much as any of todays games

and I have a P4 2.4 Ghz, Radeon 9700, 1 G Ram system which is pretty respectable IMO and have all 3 of the newest consoles PS2, GC and X-Box

Those Micro$oft controllers are NOT the bong! There are better choices.

Joystick - serious simming: Saitek X45
- arcade-style sims: Logitech StrikeForce 3D
Wheel - Logitech Momo
Gamepad - Logitech RumblePad (also available in wireless)

A top-of-the-line system deserves better than the soon-to-be-discontinued M$ products.

The MS controllers are just fine. They are a very good quality item for the price. Just because something is discontinued doesn't mean they're crap. Heck, ATI discontinued the 9500/9700 series cards just as sales were taking off and replaced them with an (arguably) inferior product.

Can't help noticing that you don't disagree that the suggested replacements are better choices.

tenoc, if you are talking to me that is because Logitech and Saitek make fine products too. But so does MS. Its whatever floats your boat in cases like this :)

Everything looks SWEET except the fugly mac display. Throw it away and get a real fast LCD like Samsung's or Hitachi's
