Do you think this joke is offensive to Jewish people?

Washington (CNN) - National Security Adviser Gen. James Jones (Ret.) apologized Monday for a two-minute joke he told before a pro-Israel think tank last week.
"I wish that I had not made this off the cuff joke at the top of my remarks, and I apologize to anyone who was offended by it," Jones said in a statement. "It also distracted from the larger message I carried that day: that the United States commitment to Israel's security is sacrosanct."
The joke, which Jones told in front of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, involved a Taliban fighter who was lost in the desert in Afghanistan and stumbled upon a small store owned by a "Jewish merchant."

"And the Taliban warrior went up to him and said 'I need water, give me some water,'" Jones said. "And the merchant said 'I'm sorry I don't have any water, but would you like to buy a tie, we have a nice sale of ties today.'"
At this point, Jones said, the Taliban fighter launched into "a stream of language that I can't repeat about Israel, about Jewish people, about the man himself, about his family, he was just saying 'I need water, you try to sell me ties, you people don't get it.'"
"Well I'm sorry that I don't have water for you, and I forgive you for all of the insults that you've levied against me, my family, my country," Jones describe the merchant as saying. "But I will help you out. If you go over that hill and walk about two miles there's a restaurant there and they have all the water you'll need," the merchant replied.
Jones said the fighter walked away but returned an hour later and said: "Your brother tells me I need a tie to get in the restaurant."
The audience burst into laughter; some applauded.
But Abraham Foxman, the national director of the Anti-Defamation League was unimpressed.
"It's inappropriate, it's stereotypic, it engages in the worst types of stereotypes about Jews," Foxman told CNN.
"Some people shouldn't tell jokes, especially generals," he added.
Foxman said he accepts Jones' apology.

I admit, I chuckled when I read it.

I'm not especially familiar with Jewish stereotypes, but it seems to me you could have put just about any two opposing races/religions in there as the shopkeeper and fighter.

I just don't understand why Foxman felt insulted.

This is not meant to be a political thread so please keep those types of comments to yourself.

Could you replace the terms Jew and Taliban with any other group, and still have a joke? Yes, you could. Therefore, fuck Foxman.

Don;t see the problem and I am guessing this was told in a room full of jews yet they "burst into laughter; some applauded".

Foxman can go screw himself. There's too much PC bullshit going around. Grow a pair, Foxman.

I have many Jewish friends and they've all seen or heard this joke. They thought it was hilarious.

well from the nature of the joke, it was totally unneccessary to state that the shop owner was jewish or the dude in the desert was a taliban fighter.

maybe he was offended that he added those two ethnicities for no reason. but since the joke wasn't really playing on any stereotype he could have just shrugged it off.

It's OK, they can take it, he wont get death threats. They are not as sensitive as the Muslims, in fact no one is.

I've heard that joke many times before and I don't find it offensive in the least.

A sailor walks into a bar. He sees a Rabbi sitting at the table, walks up to him, punches him in the face and yells "That's for the Titanic!"
The Rabbi cries "What was that for?! The Titanic was sunk by an iceburg!"
and the sailor replies: "Iceburg, Steinburg, same difference".

How is that even remotely offensive to Jews?
The person in the joke was colluding with his brother, in addition to withholding relevant information pertaining to the taliban inquiry.

You racist...

Damn, it feels good saying that

oy vey, people are being slaughtered but lets get upset over an inoffensive joke. What's a worse stereotype, that you're chintzy or that you indiscriminately kill civilians? maybe they should focus on the important stuff.

Wait a minute... you guys seriously don't get the stereotype about Jews being greedy money whoring businessmen?

I think it depends on what kind of Jewish person you are. You might be offended if you were just a regular guy, but if you're Goldman Ballsacks, you might just be proud.

Just another Schmuck playing the "I'm offended" card to get a guilt advantage. Thats all people that play the race card or similar are trying to do is to gain an advantage by making you or others feel guilty about something that really has no meaning. Oldest PC trick in the book.
