Do you think this is ok to check on an airplane?

Not really thinking of size, more of durability....

I've checked camping backpacks before and it's been fine. I don't think you'd have any problems.

Awesome, thanks... :)

Now i need to decide if i want that one for $200 (+20 or so shipping), or a smaller model (the Terra 50), which has 3500cu ft and is sold locally.

Well, im pretty sure you can tie the straps up... But are those bags suited to hold up as well as luggage under a plane?

Some airlines/airport provide big plastic bags specifically for checked-in backpacks.. at least United Airlines in LAX did last year.

i travel with a full size backback and the only issue is having to tie up all of the straps as the airlines never have the big plastic bags that they used to. my pack made it from atlanta to amsterdam to kenya and back without a problem.

Same here...traveled other places with no problems. Might want to get a durable trash bag or some duct tape to contain the straps and stuff.

Just a side note, depending on what you're doing with it....

If you're backpacking around Europe or Asia or something, bring something smaller. To each their own but bringing something too big is a nightmare. I go with your typical grade school backpack and I'm considering going smaller.

It's kind of a running joke but the only people with the big back packs are Americans and Canadians and they stick out like sore thumbs. The only difference is that the Canadians have their flags all over their bags.

It's just too bad that you were only going to New Jersey!
