Do you think this is a convincing enough message to get Cable internet access?

Currently at home I'm stuck on a 56k dialup line, which is utterly horrible! ;)

We have that + a cellular phone plan (our cell is a HUGE piece of crap, trust me). We pay about $6-7 for dialup and $16-17 for the cell phone. After 6pm we turn on the cell (unlimited time after 6 and on weekends), and that's when I get to go on the net. Oh yeah, did I mention how much of a PITA dialing up is sometimes?

Anyways, total we are paying a minimum of $22+tx every month. The cable company here is Vidéotron. They are offering free installation until October 31st.

Also, where I live, there is a government rebate for internet.. They pay 75% up to $16. We qualify, we currently use it for our dialup (hence the unrealistically low price).

Anyway, I emailed my mom at work (I had to for other reasons anyway), and I decided to drop another message, because I reeeeeally want cable after spending another weekend at my cousin's house (who has cable).

Tell me what you think, and if you think it is good enough :D ... Here it is :

Cable modem purchase - $329,05
Regular monthly rate with 12-month subscription and modem purchase - $39,95 ($29,95 if you have Cable T.V.)
Regular monthly rate with 12-month subscription and modem rental - $44,90 ($34,90 if you have Cable T.V.)

If you buy the modem and get a 12 month subscription, with the installation costs it would cost : $438.95 for the first month, and $39,95 for each following month. Expensive, no? Yes, very.

Now if you rent the cable modem, pay for 12-month subscription and subscribe before october 31st, and get the government plan, that comes out to : $28,90. You don't have the $69,95 installation, you don't have the $329,05 modem purchase, and you have $16 off every single month.

$438,95 versus $28,90!

What are we paying monthly right now? I believe it's around $6 or $7 for dialup internet and $16 or $17 for the cellular telephone. Let's assume the lowest price. $6 + $16, you get $22. So you'd be paying $6.90 more than usual, but think about what it's worth! No more busy phone lines, superfast 'net, etc. To you though, I think the most beneficial factor would be the free phone line.

Anyway, read all of that and think about it.... It's definitely worth thinking about now that we have the free installation till october 31st and government plan (this greatly reduces the price, as you can see!)...

And XMAS is coming up!... we *could* consider it an early XMAS present!

Sounds like a pretty good reason for it. Also mention the speed increase you would get, the 24/7 ontime, more tham on PC can use it and it wont slow down. YADA YADA YADA

Viper GTS: No, not right now I honestly cant :(

well, I'm sure there must be a way...... lol.

Adul - My mom couldn't care less about how fast my computer is, and she is pretty much satisfied with 56k, so the speed argument is useless against her :)

Get a job, mow some lawns, sell your body, sell something. Cable is so worth it.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention that this ISP (the only one that provides cable in my area) has a 6GB per month download limit and a 1GB per month (I think, it could be 2GB though) upload limit.

<< 6GB per month download limit and a 1GB per month >>

6gb is a lot unless you're constantly getting warez.

I think 6GB should be fine as long as you don't constantly download porn and warez.

that's real real cheap for cable internet. what speeds are they offering at that price? i have cable internet in chicago and they charge 39.95 a month for 500k down and 128 up of cource since there are only 3 people on my local node and 80 users total i average download speeds in excess of 1 MBIT. also the modem was free no rental fee but i will have to give it back if i cancell the service.

Well the downloads here are usually around 50-300KB/s (300KB/s = 2.4mbps, no?) down and maybe around ~20KB/s up. They don't offer 'different speeds' for different prices... It's just, that price.

I know 1000kbps = 1mbps.

1000kbps does not = 1000KB/s.

1KB = 8kb, therefore 10mbps = 1.25MB/s.

THEREFORE, 300KB/s = 2.4mbps (2400kbps).
