Do you think the transgender movement is bad for the gay rights movement?

The country has quickly changed course in terms of gay rights and it now enjoys overwhelming support, but do you think the new push on transgender rights will have a negative impact on this? I've never understood lumping the T in with LGB because the first three are regarding sexual orientation and the T involves gender identity, and from what I've read lately some of the gay community is opposed to lumping the two together as well.

I'm not for passing laws to restrict anyone's happiness or wellbeing, and certainly wouldn't purposefully try to discriminate against a transsexual, but with the announcement of the Chicago school that has to let the boy use the girls locker room there seems to be a growing backlash against this. Many feel that common sense has completely been cast aside and the rights of the vast majority are being trampled on for the rights of a very small minority. Even the New York Times article was filled with user comments against this, and that is a publication that attracts generally more educated and left leaning people.

That said, do you think that lumping transsexuals and homosexuals together is fair when discussing these issues or even logical and appropriate? And do you think that the growing backlash on the transgender movement will negatively effect the gay rights movement?

And I guess another follow up question, do you think that the transgender movement is harming the progressive movement as a whole, not just gay rights? I think that it wouldn't be a stretch to assume the majority of Americans don't see transexuals as normal or mentally healthy (that doesn't mean they should be hostile to them by any stretch), would this cast a bad light on liberals in the eyes of many. Even to those who would support the majority of liberal/progressive ideas?

Nobody should be surprised by this. As soon as the gays started crying about how the laws should be changed for them and all the bleeding hearts went for it, why the hell shouldn't all of the other perverts get what they want as well?

That slippery slope isn't that damn slippery.

That post has the kind of vitriol that isn't really helpful towards the conversation, and I think the bulk of the US don't despise gays or transgenders, or even think of them together. I do think that the push to have transgenders accepted as 'normal' isn't working and turning people off to liberal thing as a whole, possibly making them rethink their recent shift towards acceptance of the gay rights movement.

I can't say for sure either way. It is certainly an issue that will be more difficult to convince people of. Some will never be convinced though, but that goes for any issue.

Despise is not the correct word. People that are against something don't necessarily despise it.

Transgender rights movement needs time to mature just like gay rights. Fights over bathrooms today are the same type of anger over changing status quo that same-sex marriage was once. In a couple decades we'll likewise wonder what the big deal was over bathroom policies. There's not anything magical about people taking a shit in the vicinity of only those of their own gender, just like there isn't anything magic about only people of opposite genders getting married.

That's right... better get used to the idea of people marrying their toasters, it's coming. Nothing magic about that either.

You can marry any appliance you care to, it's no business of me or anyone else. When did the nation become such a den of busybodies that can't keep their opinions to themselves?

Gays and lesbians have done the hard work and changed minds around the country, and are now in position to secure legislative protections against discrimination for sexual orientation.
Transgenders are just starting down this road, they have a lot of teaching and convincing still to do. There are no shortcuts for this, you can't just piggyback it to gay and lesbian successes. Then you just hurt gays and lesbians and block their successes instead of building on them.

When did the nation become so lost in political correctness that it disposes of morals and traditional values? What else will future generations make a mockery of, all behind the guise of keeping your opinion to yourself?

NAMBLA is also on that piggyback train. Perhaps they will have the same success!

Traditional values are no longer moral when following them serves to hurt people unnecessarily. What clothing someone dresses in or what sense of gender identity make no difference in my life whatsoever, nor yours. Please explain what possible benefit you think we get from maintaining status quo "morals and traditional values" when it comes to transgendered people? Would you have them drink from separate water fountains also?

The world is never made worse by having more love in it, or showing kindness to others. That still applies whether it's gays loving each other or the kindness is to a transgender person.

MORALS, TRADITIONS, THINK OF THE CHILDREN!

FYI your traditions are stupid, your morals are antiquated and the worlds overpopulated so fuck your kids.

Hows that for politically correct.

This backlash is just hate towards Caitlyn Jenner because she's putting herself as the face of a moment and they are so negative of her from the start for being part of the Kardashian clan.

They don't really know how transgender people think. The haters are thinking like trans people are normal straight people but perverts like Caitlyn Jenner. To be honest the worst thing that happened to the trans community is Caitlyn Jenner because the Kardashians have been nothing but negative to America. Just look at how many women want a fucking butt implant or lip injections

My trans friends often tell me they were so much better with Andreja Pejić and Lana Wachowski as representative models. No one was ever negative about Sunny Bono or Shiloh Pitt (that's right.. Brad and Angelina's kid is transgender).

Personally I'm a bit worried of the backlash a bit since I don't want my friends to have a repeat of California Prop 8.. got married legally and then have it canceled but grandfathered in.

Well you do have one thing right. Bruce Jenner is trying to be the face of I don't know what, but all he is is a transvestite freak.

And Shiloh Pitt is 9 years old for fuck sake, only reason that is even happening at her age is no doubt a product of today's mind-fucked gender warped society. How about you wait until she is an age to where she doesn't still believe in santa claus before you say what she is or isn't.

Most of my trans friends knew at age 7-8 they were transgender and they haven't changed at all in the last 30 years.

You think Transgender became the hip thing now? You're an idiot then.

It's been happening since before you were born. It's just more so on TV now so Transgenders aren't killing themselves as much as before. Before they'd just be labeled as suicides.
