I watched as Colin Powell said in direct response to this question. "No."

There's your answer.

Leaders have had to rescind the commitment not to conscript in the past. Colin powell's answer is quite useless, although I hope that the draft does not kick in.

Why would it? They don't really need it and they know it would cause a huge upset in the American populous, especially for College age and Vietnam era people.

You hope so?!

Yes. In fact,I think all citizens should be required to serve in the military in service to their country for no less than 2 years, male and female.

You enjoy the freedom, earn it.

What good is it to the country if you have a whole slew of people who don't want to be there? Serves no good to have a mandatory military requirement

Tripleshot, not all of us would like to see our fathers/brothers/friends/selves screaming and crying, and covered in blood. I'm sorry if that makes us unpatriotic. My grandfather served, and refuses to discuss it because the things he saw were "too horrible to talk about." War scarred him, and millions of others. And you want to see this happen to everyone, more often?

Yeah....I'm with johnjohn here. I respect your opinion tripleshot, but I'm sorry, I just dont believe in war like that. It scares, scars, and kills innocent people. I feel only people who want to go to war should serve.

Hmmm. You enjoy the freedom to make these statements but want nothing to do with protecting that freedom? You think that job should go to someone else? Why are you so special, that the job of defending your country should not be your job, even if it takes just a short time out of your busy life?

Oh, I see. You are cowards. You are spineless pussys that think being a soldier is beneath your dignity.

Over 5000 of your countrymen and women were slaughtered 6 days ago and they did not get up that morning expecting to meet their maker so soon. The men and women who are working diligently around the clock at great risk to themselves to try and find any survivors from this tragedy doso out of a sense of honor and love for their country.

You do not belong among them with your chickensh!t pansy attitude. I am ashamed you have no guts.

Have a nice day. A vet gave it to you.:|

I am a closet conservative. I do support some liberal social programs, but fiscally conservative and loyal American. I am closer to the middle than far left or right.

I think there should be mandatory service for both men & women right after high school (to straighten up some of them slackers and build confidence into the weaklings :)). Maybe like boot camp and then go into 2 years of reserve duty (to allow for college studies).

I was also wondering how often hijackings would occur if the terrorists knew that the planes would be full of US citizens with military training ?

So you would rather have others fight and die for the freedom you enjoy?

I think i have to put back a sig i used when i first got here:

Sacrifice is giving up something good for something better. - Uknown

In Taiwan, every male has to serve in the military for 2 years or so.... Probably because they have a small population (can't get enough recruits) and that they have a big menace (China) right next to them.

I like that idea. And those who say that the draft would lead to unrest, are you forgetting WW2? There was a draft then and there wasn't a big stink like in Viet Nam. But there is a huge differance between WW2, Viet Nam, and the current situation.

In World War 2 you had Pearl Harbor and The Germans steam rollering Europe and Northern Africa, and later came the revelation of the Concentration Camps. All causes that the American public could get behind to defeat.

In Viet Nam you really had no clear cut goals, no real National interest at stake. Our culture was also under going a big upheavel as well. Civil Rights movement, the Kennedy assasinations, Cuban Missile Crisis, race riots. With all that going on at home, with so much turmoil and disharmony amongst the population, and no clear cut goal, that was clearly no time to be fighting a war. Hence the huge problem with the Draft at the time.

With our current situation we witnessed, live on televison, the slaughter of thousands of innocent Civilians. Not only American but other nationalities as well. This occured right here on our own soil, in our faces.

If you, as an American, can honestly say you would not be willing to answer your Country's call in it's time of need, then you are truly not an American. You were merely birthed within it's borders.

CNN was just doing a "public open forum" q&a with some senior pentagon person, and he was asked if the Draft might need to be reinstated. The pentagon person said with all the voulenteers pouring in and all the reserves, there will be NO NEED for a draft.

So a person is automatically a "spineless pussy" if they don't want to serve in the military. I'm sure there were a few firefighters that died at the WTC that didn't want to be soldiers, but I sure wouldn't call them "spineless pussies." Like many other things, your idea sounds good and noble, but it doesn't work out that well. Simply put not everyone is capable of being a soldier. Everyone on this planet is different, there are some people who could never been a mortician, coroner, or surgeon because of thejob requirements. Similarly there are people that just aren't cut out to be a soldier. Don't you think a small more capable military is better than a larger military where 10% of the people in your squardron might have a breakdown in a critical situation and endanger his fellow soldiers lives?

So like I said, I think mandatory military service sounds good, but in practice, we'd find alot more problems with it.

Soybomb: Mandatory military service doesn't mean that everyone would be a combat soldier. There are multitudes of jobs in the Armed services. The military still needs cooks, mechanics, firemen, police, even computer geeks :) Is everyone capable of being a fighting soldier? No but the majority of the population could do some job in the Aremed Services.

I absolutely agree... that's why when you're in college, they don't draft you, because you'll be more productive than you would be in the military (unless you enlist).

But we're talking about a DRAFT here, when your nation NEEDS you to help defend your freedom and liberty.

Most of the world actually has mandatory military service.
