for $600, you can buy an entire gaming PC that can perform similarly to spec and can do alot more. The whole point of a gaming console is to strip away all the other crap of a PC and be cheaper because of it. In the end, you have a system that can do a whole bunch of diluted crap about half-way to a computer for the same price.

You can't build an entire gaming PC that is comparable to the PS3 for $600.
$50 case
$50 motherboard
$100 RAM
$100 video card
$100 hard drive
$50 optical drive
$100 CPU
$150 XP license
That's $700 and it's going to be a pretty crappy gaming system.

I believe it is estimated that the PS3 costs Sony $800-900 to build. (suckers)

revised version:

$50 case
$100 CPU + mobo (athlon 3400+ + mobo @ NE)
$70-100 on ram depending on what you buy
$100 hdd
$150 XP license
$100 7600GT (pretty good if you ask me, my x850 still does most things at 1280x1024)

total: $600

edit: HTF does cyberpowerpc offer that stuff for so cheap? those are SMOKING deals. is the place legit? my next PC might be from them just so i can save a crapload of $$

i know some of it is barebones style, but still - im still pretty impressed for some reason.. maybe im missing something.

hey, sorry for replying so late. But yeah, CyberpowerPC is definitely legit. They just take literally 3 weeks to get a system to your door after ordering =

back on topic- you can probably get the ram for cheaper than $70 of the price listed, and XP Home Edition for $100 seeing as how the native OS of the PS3 isn't going to be anywhere near windows XP. They don't make 40/60 gig Harddrives anymore, but if they did, I'm sure they would be less than $100 as well.

so expect to build a comparable PC for $500.

theres really no need, theres no 1st hand system games anymore. Microsoft studios don't really produce games anymore so what ever you can get on the xbox, you can get on the ps3. But thank god for nintendo. Try playing mario on a 360. or zelda on your PS3. I support the Wii all the way

+ $800 BD-ROM drive

total: $1500

The bottom line is if you are interested in BD playback, it's a fantastic deal. If you aren't, it isn't.

True. I just hope they don't run into the same problem like the PS2 DVD drive had. Play one to many movies and oops broken DVD drive.

I still think its a little to expensive with less and less companies choosing to make games available to all consoles.
