Do you think that AMD will eventually design video cards that run only on systems with AMD CPU's?

My uneducated guess is that future ATI video cards will at the very least be "optimized" for AMD CPU's, effectively separating the market into AMD/ATI and Intel/NVIDIA.

Is that allowed? If it were wouldnt microsoft design windows to not boot if it detected linux or any other operating system? Or maybe have windows delete the other operating system if detected?

Dosent sound very legal. I dont think you can simply cut the competition out of the picture.

Why would it be "illegal"?

Is it "illegal" for SLI to only work on NVIDIA chipsets, and Crossfire only on ATI chipsets, despite the fact that they would work just fine on other chipsets if the drivers allowed it? Don't think so. This would be the same thing on a bigger scale.

That it would be. You'd cut the market for the video cards in half (if not more).

On a more general note, I don't even know *how* you could do much to "optimize" for AMD CPUs, given that AMD and Intel CPUs run the same instruction sets. Unless you're talking along the lines of purposefully crippling performance on Intel CPUs. I can't see a lot of upside to doing that, unless ATI's video cards were *so* much better than everything else that they felt they could force people to switch to AMD just because of them.

Windows could *try* to do the former, but it would be pretty pointless and rather hard to do 100%. If it did the latter, people would be suing Microsoft for screwing up their computers on purpose.
