When I was a kid if I acted up I got a wooden spoon whomping on the ass. I turned out fine. I guess it's hard to know where to draw the line though.

Beating the crap out of your children? Wrong.
Spanking them to establish limits on their behavior? Not wrong.

wow, I'm surprised I really thought this poll would go the other way.

This thread is inspired by watching Nanny 911 tonight (yeah I know, but I was to lazy to change the channel). Anyway you can probably guess what happened, a group of kids from hell with 1 or 2 parents who don't have a clue. The family they had on tonight were'nt the most unruly I've ever seen but the mother made me want to slap something. She was just so detached from raising the children and in complete denial about the reality of the situation. People like that piss me off soooo bad.

The thing about young children is that they haven't necessarily developed mentally enough to understand abstract concepts, so a spanking (with its immediate mind pain sensation, coupled with obvious parental disapproval) provides an effective means of getting a child to clearly understand that something he or she did was wrong.

Exactly.

The other benefit of spanking (for the undeveloped child mind) is that it is over and done with in an instant. This makes it so the child understands the reason for the punishment, and suffers considerably less psychological and emotional harm, than would be the case with extended psychological punishments like harsh yelling or forced isolation (aka "timeout").

agreed
we go for a time-out first, which *usually* does the job.

if they act up again, they get a spanking. the two of them are pretty well behaved so far. i got the same thing as a kid and turned out ok, mostly ;)

i find it to be ok for young children (not too hard at all) but totally wrong after a certain age. If my dad could not control his anger if my brother or i did something stupid (like normal dumb stuff 13, 14, 15, 16 year old kids do) he would force us onto our stomachs and hit us as hard as he could. At one time, i got so scared, i ran to my friends house down the street. I never told anyone about that but i have never been so frightened in my life.

Since that point, i find spanking to not work all that well.

So you would'nt spank your children based on your experience?

I think discipline should never be done in anger

I would spank them when they are younger... I would try the time out thing first though. My mom and dad had different ways of punishing me and my mom's way (which was the time out) worked just as well when i were little than my dads way. Plus, with the time out, i learned not to be mad at my mom for what she did, that it was MY fault for acting up.

With my dad, i was mad at him because he seemed to take his anger from what i did out on me.

No but it depends on the situation and how excactly they are being spanked.

I think spanking should be a last resort when you have a kid that won't listen to anything else and really needs to be put in his/her place.
