Do you think some people will ge willing to donate a plane ticket?

At my company I am part of the holiday party commitee. It is up to us to raise money for the party. One idea we have is this:

Our company pays to fly some employees to meetings all the time. The company uses southwest airlines, and as you know southwest has a rewards program. Each 8 round trip flights you get a free round trip ticket to use any where. The company lets people keep this free ticket for their own personal use. There are probably 20 people who have flown enough for the company to have one each year.

Our hope is we will be able to convince a few of these 20 or so people to give us their free plane ticket. We will then rafle or sell it off for money for the holiday party.

So do you think in general people will be willing to give us a free plane ticket, which they didnt pay for?

I travel a lot for work and I view the freebies are part of the compensation. So--No, I wouldn't give it to the holiday party. (I do give away free travel to friends/family.)

Anyway, what kind of company does not pay for the holiday party? Call me a grinch, but I'd rather have no company party than to pay for one

But they are the ones who traded their evenings with their families and nights in their own beds for a hotel room.

You're basically asking people to give up their freebies for a chance to win it back. Look at it this way: If you had $5, would you keep it, or would you buy a scratch off lottery card where the max prize COULD be $5?

Nope. Earning those free tickets is one of the main reasons I am willing to travel all the time.

If I had the 'free' ticket I would not give it up, and the person asking is going to look like a fool. Better come up with a better plan.

One option is to ask the company to 'provide' one or two paid vacation days that you could raffle off. People are willing to buy tickets if they have a chance to get a vacation day out of it......

Agreed. Any perks that I receive for traveling I see as compensation for my time away. I would not give any of them up.

If the planning committee thinks it's such a great idea, then let one of you give up your free ticket. You shouldn't put other employees in the position of looking bad for not wanting to give up something that valuable. If you *did* get a ticket from someone, you can be certain that that employee feels like they were coerced into it.

When the company gives them the ticket, it becomes their property. Obviously the company considers it to be part of their compensation for inconveniencing the employees by making them travel and be away from home and family frequently. If the tickets able to be sold, then you're taking money from their pockets because they could have sold them and kept the cash themselves. Why would those employees be expected to pay for everyone to have a party?

I wasn't about to waste it or give it away just because it happened upon me instead of me earning it.
