who are irrationally afraid of chemicals?

the other night, I had to listen to this guy carry on for like half an hour about how much better Boston Market chicken is over KFC because MSG is a product of the devil and it's a chemical designed to make us addicted to fast food.

not sure I could have rolled my eyes any further back.

and then today, one of my friends made a FB post about how she loves crystal lite and like half a dozen of her friends were like horrified over consuming aspartame.

I think less of anyone who has a self-admitted irrational fear of anything.

Absolutely. I generally think there is something very wrong with their mental health and they are bordering on needing to be institutionalized. Something very wrong with their head.

I don't like aspartame b/c it tastes like ass. I actually avoid, whenever I can, products that contain aspartame

but that's another story.

Really? I figured there would be more smart people around here, I guess computer nerds aren't too worried about their health... I'm not a spaz about it but I do keep an eye on chemicals and 90-95% of the time I'll opt for something 'natural'.

Really look into the side effects of some of the stuff they put in your food. It's kinda scary. and MSG is the devil, along with any hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils...

He said an irrational fear, meaning without basis. If he had simply stated a fear of unnatural additives, I would have agreed with him.

How do you define 'natural'? Everything is 'natural'.

I heard an advertisement the other day on the radio, about some silver-based stuff you chuck in your pool instead of the hypochlorites people normally use, and it was going on about how silver is somehow more organic than hypochlorous acid.

I'm not sure what kinds of things you buy. Going through all the canned stuff in our house (which basically just amounts to tuna) there's nothing on the ingredients list I would worry about the slightest in eating. The ham in the fridge has too much salt, but hey. You can't win 'em all.

if god didn't want our strawberries spliced with fish genes, he wouldn't have given us the technology to do so.

Yes. Being wary of what you eat is one thing, but taking anecdotal tales of horrible symptoms that might be cause by something else entirely and trumpeting them as proof that you should not eat [insert chemical] is stupid.

If you're worried about something, look into it. Most of the stuff people worry so much about is harmless in moderate amounts, but people would rather get their information by the "that's what everyone says" method. I look down on the people who choose to be afraid of things and don't take the time to figure out whether that fear is justified.

Uh, no. Just misinformed or ignorant. I don't think I'm better than them.

I now think less of you because of that post. :p

Really the 3 things you listed are so what. Ones a salt that people like to claim to have reactions to, though when actually tested people will say they reacted to it from the food they ate when there was none in there food. The other two show up in the nutrition label. :p

Last year, the Province of Ontario decided to ban all pesticides and herbicides for non-agricultural use. This was largely due to people in Toronto screaming how dangerous these chemicals were despite the federal government labelling them as safe.

That summer saw an explosion in the population of Giant Hogweed. The plant secretes a chemical that causes hypersensitivity to UV light on skin contact. It can cause third degree radiation burns if not washed off in time. The only way to kill it? You guessed it, by the chemicals they banned. It's always funny to watch people in hazmat suits pulling this stuff by hand.

Yes, I do have a fear for a natural lifestyle. I want anti-biotics when I get bacterial. I want anti-fungal medicine if I have a fungus. I want aspirin if I feel sick. I want preservatives in my food so they last longer. I like pesticides because they are efficient at killing bugs and make food cheaper. I enjoy the wonders of technology because it has increased quality of life.
