Do you think I should get an 8600 Ultra?

A64 3000+
MSI RS482M4-IL Skt. 939
1 GB Corsair VS DDR400
eVGA 6600 GT 256 MB
350 W PSU
1280 x 1024

Since the 8600 Ultra is apparently coming out in a few weeks for $180, would it be worth an upgrade? I mean, would anything else seriously hold back my system if I wanted to turn all the settings up on games that came out in 2005 and before (since those are mostly what I play)?

I was thinking about it as well. I cant afford top end cards, and I will be going from AGP to pci-e with my next upgrade so even less money will be put towards a vid card.

For the price, I think it would be a great card.

i thought those leaked pictures of nvidias current and future lineup dismissed the 8600 Ultra...because i didnt even see it on that chart.

im praying that it still comes out. 256bit, 512MB memory mid-range card? heck yeah!

I'd wait and see, but based on MSRP, I'd save up a bit more and get a 320MB GTS over the high-end 8600 GT/Ultra.

Latest leaked G80 Roadmap

Based on this roadmap and other leaked specs, I don't see the 8600 competing well with the 320MB 8800.

Where are you seeing a $399 320MB GTS? They are all at $299

Since nothing is known about 8600-series performance (though we can guesstimate a little based on specs), there is no real 'proper' answer to the question you ask. Only time, pricing and benchmarks will tell.

I was looking at chizow's link for the $399 price on the 320 MB 8800 GTS.

Hmmm...I didn't know that card was already out, though...

The 8900GT looks close to what the 8600Ultra specs were rumoured to be - with the benefit of extra shader processors too, so that looks like the mid-range card of choice if it's at the right price.

possibly even the 8900GS (if you get the one that has 512MB of memory) too.

Hmmm...an 8600U looks like a pretty tempting replacement for my 7600GT later this year...but maybe I'll just spring for the 8900GT this time

To the OP I think an 8600U would be a good upgrade for your system, since it will probably offer similar performance to an X1950 judging from the listed specs.
