Do you think I should get a decoder card...???

Hi, I installed a 5X speed DVD player using PowerDVD software in a box containing a Celeron 466 with 64 megs of RAM. I am using both a TNT2 Vanta cards AND a TNT2 32 meg viper 770 cards (they both perform the same) and I am getting some choppiness and mild stutter.
I have no problems running this early rev. which I believe is 1.6 or 1.7?? PowerDVD on a Duron 850 with 256 megs of memory and using a Rage Fury MAXX - smooth as butter! What do you folks think? I already shut down all the background stuff already.

intervideo windvd 2000 2.3 has the highest video/sound quality. It decodes the subwoofer channel too. powerdvd 3.0 is the only cyberlink player worth getting, its almost as good as intervideo windvd. Older versions of both had inferior picture quality/sound.. which is to be expected😛

DVD decoding is insanely processor intensive, so you might need to beef up your processor speed to get faster decoding if you want to stick with the software route.

I'd recommend picking up a Holywood + Decoder from Sigmadesigns if you want some rock solid play back. Hollywood Plus

I had one for a few months then I upgraded my machine and I really didn't need it anymore, but it was good card.

The reason why I am trying to get away with software decoding is
that my friend is short on a budget. I have a spare ATI rage pro
turbo and I want to know whould that help since it comes with some
kind of motion compensation chip or chipset that helps decode DVD?
I had a BH-6 with a Celeron 300A overclocked to 450 with a TNT1 card in the past and software decoding looked great then...

Thanks in advance - everybody!

might try that ati with a higher bus speed for the 466.. bus speed matters😛 by the way, you don't need to "get away" with software decoding. software decoders are at a point where they are superior to those decoder cards for desktop playback.

the problem is, cpus are getting so powerful that there's no incentive for companies like sigma to work on a new decoder card for the pc. So what you're getting is comparing today's software with hardware from around 3 years ago ...

true, but anything done in hardware can be done through software, there is no incentive to build hardware decoders anymore.. tv out is about it.

Just use WinDVD it uses a little more CPU than PowerDVD does but the video quality and audio quality is better. video quality is significantly better.

I know this guy on these forums who has windvd 2000 2.1 (full version) and an update to windvd 2.3. He puts his site on his signature. I think you know you *cough*

Well folks, this is what I did... I took out the Shuttle LX chipset mb with the Celeron 466 and installed a Soyo ZX chipset mb with the built in rage pro turbo video chipset with eight megs of memory and the problem is now solved. It runs real smooth using a celeron 450 but I suspect that the Shuttle mb was starting to flake out on me. I knew the cpu was fast enough for software decoding. Thanks to all and have a pleasant evening.

funny thing is that in the early days of mp3, my system was barely able to handle that alone hahaha. my 486 has to run it mono low quality at 100%cpu usage.. i had to upgrade to 166mhz pentium to play mp3's
