Your player can probably read an MP3 CD but probably not an MP3 DVD.

DVDs and CDs use different technology. You have to have a DVD player to read a DVD, because it uses a smaller laser. If you try to run a DVD in a CD player, it just won't work, the CDs laser is too large to be able to read any information off the DVD.

Doesn't do MP3s but is definitely the first factory-installed mobile 5.1 setup

well here's a question, can a dvd have regular cd tracks (red book audio) burned to it and therefore be played back on a dvd player?

The Sony MPD-AP20U is a portable USB DVD/CD-RW Combo drive that also functions as a portable MP3 CD Player. The internal rechargeable battery and docking station with AA batteries gives a respectable amount of time as a CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive without a power supply! This is the best thing I've ever had for working on PC's. You get an absurd amount of battery life if you go on a full charge, bring the dock with AA batteries, and play your music off of a solid-state memory stick. You get insane capacity for super cheap if you burn MP3 DVD's.

^All this with Discman-styling and a Memroy Stick slot for solid-state MP3 playback! Of course, the 2GB MS will run you A little over $100 and that's if you shop HARD.
