Do you think firewire is necessary for a notebook?

Cuz I'm looking at the IBM T40 notebook and I noticed that it hasn't got any firewire ports. What do you guys think?

Thanks for any opinion.

It completely depends on whether you think you would use a firewire port or not. I have an iPod, and a DVD burner in a firewire (and USB2 case) so a firewire port on a notebook, especially for the iPod, is important.

But, if you have no firewire peripherals and the notebook includes a USB2 port, you can pretty much get by without one. One kind of nice thing with firewire is that it can also act as a 400Mbit network port with another firewire capable machine. 🙂

I agree. It entirely depend on whether you have a firewire peripheral or not. If you don't have one, then most likely you will never use it (I've never use the firewire port until my gf get the ipod. Even without the firewire port built-in to the t40, you can still get a pccard with a firewire port or more and use it occasionally with the ipod. It is not like I sync ipod everyday (more like every month).

As the others said, it depends on whether you already have firewire devices. Personally, I think if you don't have firewire ports, make sure the laptop has USB 2.0, otherwise you'll have to use some sort of PCMCIA card to achieve high speed external connectivity. This is not a huge pitfall, but I think it would be more beneficial to not have to carry around an additional card to use a peripheral.

I think it is a good benefit to have at least one firewire port on a portable system. You never know when you might need it.

Yes, but the problem is there is no more space in a thin and light laptop nowaday to fit 2 usb2.0 and a firewire port 🙂 Look at IBM T40. The best laptop ever created (IMHO of course) and there is simply no space left for the firewire port. The thing is so packed that unless IBM want to reduce the size of the battery, I don't see how can they fit another port to the laptop.

they could always remove the parallel port.

Mday - great idea! I seriously hope companies pick up on that.

I do a lot of video editing, some of it paid (money=good) and I would consider a firewire port a necessity. However, if you really want a laptop that doesn't have one, don't forget that pcmcia firewire cards are only $20.

Good idea. However, there are still some legacy peripherals using the parallel port (I rarely use it though). We may see notebook without parallel port (or completely legacy free) widely produced in the coming years. Most laptop mfg nowaday still include the parallel port while get rid of the serial port.

thanks for the input ladies 😉 I'm sure there are PCMCIA Firewire cards so that wouldn't be a problem I guess. The T40.... soooooooo nice 😀
