TL;DR: In interviewing survivors, they often regret their decisions in mid-air (if not before). I can't find a link to the article, but in one of my psych classes, there were a lot of studies done on suicide & like 99.9% of the time it's a combination of circumstances that lead them into a bad decision in the
moment, rather than being extensively pre-meditated, meaning that all most people need is for someone to give them a hand out of that line of thinking - and a lot of people attempting it weren't even considering it before, it was just kind of a heat of the moment thing where they felt really bad, were drinking, got fired, etc. and it all came to a peak. That's one of the reasons there are
suicide hotlines on bridges.
