Do you think a 1ghz thunderbird (100mhz) could run without a fan with a Alpha PAL8045 in a Enlight EN-7237 with a Enermax 350w whisper PSU (2fans), a rear fan, and a front fan?

if you ducted the exhaust fan right behind it through the heatsink it would probably work. theres a prejudice against fan-off-heatsink thermal solutions around here. if you undervolt it to the minimum it'll work fine. someone around here had a GHz t-bird with only the PS's exhaust fan, and a big duct from the heatsink.

Possibly if you have all the other fans in the case pointing directly at the processor and you drop the voltage far below it's rated specifications.

true story
1.4G T-Bird with Dragon Orb 3 ran for undetermined amount of time.... I do not shut my machine down...
the fan header went out on my Epox 8K7A. I took the side cover off my case to install a second hard drive...and i did not hear the familiar whine of the dragon...I did notice the inside of the case was hotter than normal..then i saw the fan was not running on my orb 🙂
plugged it in another header..case cooled down quick....lucky me!!!

It'll work for a few minutes 🙂

I have the same setup - on an Iwill kk266 so they're all right there together, makes a nice little box of turbulance, but even though I can get away with a quiet panaflow, no fan...no work.

I ain't no thermal physicist or Heatsink Scientist, but... 😀

It may work, it really depends on how efficient that particular heatsink is. It is likely that that Alpha will keep your cpu cool enough not to burn it out, but it may not keep it cool enough to prevent heat related problems such as lockups, reboots, etc. For a low noise system, you could likely just put a low rpm fan on that heatsink.

There was a heatsink made for doing just what you want, it was/is made by a Korean company, Zalman(sp). There was a recent thread about this hs, so do a search. It's kinda pricey, but it's kinda cool(no pun) looking too.

dont' do it...in fact, make your computer as load as possible with fans--get that high-pitched noise-producing Delta and mod the hell out of your case. Louder is always better. 🙂

agreeed

🙂

just look at all those straight pipes on harleys

mmm setting off Car Alarms as I zoom down busy brooklyn streeets

A friend forgot to plug in the fan on a 1 Ghz thunderbird and it got up to 80*C in 5 seconds with a heatsink.

Yes, and make sure to insulate the heat sink with nitro-glycerin or a similar substance.

If you used a duct to direct air from an intake fan it might work. But there's no way it could just sit by itself inside the case without a fan. Adding a second duct to an exhaust fan would be a good idea as well.

well if the power supply had a REAL fan, the bottom fan on the enermax, is so low, as to be useless .. it only kicks its max rpm when it reads like 85c or something like that. and even its max is too low to be useful, .. i like the enermax, but have no illusions about how weak the fan is .. just use a taisol or something quiet .. good luck ..
