Do you tell people what you want for Christmas?

This thread along with some internal family discussions right now, got me thinking... do people really do this as adults? Say "I want this and that for Christmas."? Just doesn't seem generally right.

I know the arguments will be "why should they guess on what to buy me and just have me return it then?" and I will counter with if they don't know what you would like, whats the point in them buying you a gift?

For kids sure, they are the ones that should be the ones getting gifts IMHO. Adults? Generally speaking, I guess I don't overly see it as "necessary" in today's day and age.

I'm not being a scrooge either. In fact there is no time of the season I enjoy more than the holidays (evident by the decorations on/in my house). I completely enjoy the season for what it was/is intended... enjoying friends and family, not being lavished (or lavishing people) with gifts.

I tell people to not get me anything at all. I appreciate that they want to buy me a christmas gift, but I have enough stuff as it is. If they really really feel the need to get me something I tell them either cash or a check made out to Child's Play will do nicely. Christmas for me is about being with my family, gifts are nice but that's not what does it for me.

No.

I'm 23 this Xmas and not sure what I'll get. I use to just get £££ when I was younger. I just buy what I want and I'm treating myself to a nice bike to place the one that some mofo stole 6 weeks ago...

I'm not Christians, so I don't give/expect anything for Christmas. Usually I get a few cards, and presents from my grandmother, and maybe a bit of money, but it's not really something I celebrate or feel should be special to me.

No, because they usually ask.

uhh so then do you sit there silently? If they ask, then you tell correct?

When they ask, I just give them a few ideas, not a specific item. If they don't ask, I am silent. I am happy with and grateful for whatever I receive.

This year was such a boring year for my list ... all clothing .. I feel like I have become my Dad, always asking for clothes for Xmas. Saving grace are the inevitable gift cards from Newegg, Office Depot, etc. that I ask for. They let me enjoy Xmas gifts whenever stuff goes on sale or is getting cleared off shelves !

Thats my point. Yet so many adults (and older "children") actually still do this. To me its sad that this is what Christmas is reduced to. Even if you're not Christian, why can't the holiday simply be around freinds and family?

only thing I ever want for christmas is a resupply of sucks and underwear, other than that I buy whatever I want for myself.

Ditto, minus the underwear part. I buy my own underwear. Free socks are fine though.

generally only on major or specific items. Then the rest is up to them.

I didn't trust my wife to buy just any plasma screen last year. I think she needed to hear the words 50" 8 gen Panasonic. You know?

Plus most people in my family ask. My kids tell me what they want.
