Do you take vitamin capsules/tablets? If so specify.

There's a thread in H&F citing recent studies that show that multivitamins have no demonstrable benefit.

Yes, yes, that's periodically the case, I don't mind the expense.

I'm not tied to a brand, whatever I find that's not overly expensive, provides adequate vitamins and I'll generally get one that's "men's formula" which has no iron, includes saw palmetto and the like.

There are also multiple studies indicating that for those who don't have an *insert anbiguous standard* healthy diet, they can serve as a good safety net. It's quite the controversial issue at the moment.

Personally I wouldn't live without them. Maybe I'm deficient or something, but I used to get horrible allergies until I started taking a multi. Now I get a bad cold about twice a year and allergies 3 times tops; and I almost never get sick. I go off the multis, and everything comes back. Given that I've had the same experience with zinc supplements, I'm pretty sure that has a lot to do with it.

Well KingGheedora is partially correct. About 90% of what you take in each pill isn't absorbed by your body. So, they have a benefit, but not to the tune that most people think they do.

I don't take any vitamin supplements because I'm not a sucker. I don't take them for the same reason I don't use homeopathic medicine, acupuncture or chiropractic.

Well obviously no one absorbs everything, but absorption is dependent on everything from the individual's genes to if it's taken with food to where the ingredients come from. I have a hard time believing the 90% bit unless they're just taken dry with nothing else in the stomach.

Oh there certainly are legitimate reasons to take them in certain cases (differentiating them from homeopathy and acupuncture). I don't dispute that. I obviously can't know if you fall into one of those categories, but for most people they're totally unnecessary.

When I tracked everything I ate on FitDay.com I was exceeding or meeting the daily recommended amounts for almost all vitamins and minerals. I think they are a scam, unless you are malnourished, or need extra of a particular chemical due to some condition. People who take certain medication might need extra calcium, some who are anemic might need Vitamin B, scurvy scaliwags might need Vitamin C, etc. But someone who eats an average to healthy diet shouldn't see any benefit from a multivitamin.
