it seems like at any given point in time, at least one friend, family member, or coworker is trying to quit smoking cigarettes. and I can only think of one person who's ever actually done it successfully (that would be my dad, who quit cigarettes when my older sister was born and replaced them with pot).

so whenever someone tells me that they're quitting, I just kinda laugh.

my mom quit for several years, so I guess I give her credt for trying, but after my sister and I moved out, she went back to a pack a week (only behind my dad's back, though).

edit: I personally have never smoked... not for health reasons or anything, it's just never appealed to me.

I personally have never smoked... not for health reasons or anything, but because watching your grandmother die of lung cancer really sucks. :(

Just because they fall off the wagon when trying to quit doesn't mean they weren't being serious. The addiction is quite powerful.

I've never smoked and when I hear a smoker saying they will quit I believe it as much as I believe all of the fat women who swear they are dieting.

"successfully quitting" and "trying to quit" are very different. There is a very high failure rate, even for people who are strongwilled. When someone says "I'm quitting smoking", It means that they are trying to not smoke, sometimes they may give into a craving, sometimes not.

Heck, I quit smoking for over a month, but then I went drinking, and after the 17th or 18th drink .. I REQUIRED to smoke, so I bought a pack, and smoked throughout the rest of the night. Since then I've smoked 2 more packs .... (about 1 pack per week) ....
I ran out of Cigs at 7PM yesterday, and so far I've been good. I don't have any urges right now, and i am NOT planning on stopping to pick some up on my way home.

Depends what you mean by "seriously" - I believe they want to quit, but I know firsthand how difficult it is and that most attempts fail.

I flushed a whole pack of Marlboro lights down the shatter 1yr 2 months ago and it was one of the hardest things I ever did. It sucked worse then my last divorce because I loved my cigs more then my Ex ;)

No, I normally don't take them seriously because I know their chances of failing are incredibly high. The same for people who say "That's it, I'm losing weight and never getting fat again." It's almost certainly a fallacy. If I had to place odds I'd put it on the smoker stopping forever than a fatty staying unfat forever, however.

"I can't get into flossing, I can't. People who smoke say you don't know how hard it is to stop smoking. Yes I do. It's as hard as it is to start flossing. You seem jittery. Yeah, I'm about to floss."

It's like someone telling you they're going to quit masturbating....

A: It's not true.
B: Who gives a shit?

Both my parents quit cold turkey (at different times) back in the 80's. Both where 15+ year smokers. Neither is "superhuman." Both decided they would quit and did.

People today are weak.

I agree, but I wouldn't put it quite that way. I think people who can't kick the habit are weak. You control your own body, nobody is forcing you to put smoke in your lungs. I smoked a pack a day for 10 years, woke up one moring and said WTF am I doing to myself, gave away my carton. It's been 3 months now and I will never smoke another cigarette. Sure, there are times I think I'd really like a smoke, but why the hell would I take one?

Haha, at my last job, one of my co-workers "QUIT" about seven different times within a year. She had some nicorette on her desk for about three months, one day I saw it in the trash, none of it opened.
