Do you support the REAL ID act?

This is the year is it supposed to go into effect. It was passed 100 - 0 in the Senate and 368 - 58 in the House (it should be noted that this idea was porked together along with tsunami relief and other things). The reason for the several delays announced is due to a good many states not supporting the ID.

Proponents of the ID in the 2008 presidential race include Obama, Hillary, McCain, Romney, and Giuliani.

Opponents of the ID in the 2008 presidential race include Paul, Edwards, Huckabee, and Kucinich (no longer running),

I am personally against it. I don't think the Federal government has the authority to issue these national ID cards.

My reason as well. It is a solution in search of a problem, or more accurately, it's a multi-billion dollar piece of security theater. The notion that we can fight the bad guys if only we could positively identify everyone is one of the more ridiculous notions to have gripped this country in the wake of 9/11...all the more so when you consider that REAL ID won't even really help in positively identifying people.

An interesting choice of words, such feelings could only come from a computer program. A real person would never love someone knowing EVERY detail of their life. Everyone loves to talk about giving government more power to peer into our lives, yet very few of them seem willing to hold a press conference discussing the type of pornography they enjoy. Hmm...I wonder why that is?

we are already in so many databases and have so many numbers associated with us, i don't see that it matters anymore

What an asinine answer...

"Well the ship is already sinking... If the captain wants to light it on fire too, I don't think it could make matters any worse."

You're looking at the problem the wrong way. The issue isn't the physical ability to protect our personal information, the issue is whether or not collection of that data is legal. Far from being unable to stop the flood, we can totally turn it around with a few laws. If companies were fined for keeping our personal information without specifically asking us if they could do so, and if intelligence folks went to jail for skirting wiretapping laws, we would quickly find ourselves with much more privacy.

Are you telling me God's not real? And please don't say that self knowledge leads to self hate. It's just the other way round. And sadly I don't like pornography at all. All I see are young women who have no self respect and sell their bodies for money because they lack the moral character to know they could make an honest living. I see only sadness and loneliness and emptiness there. Kind of hard to get sexual toward someone who has so little self respect they would try to turn you on for money.

Self knowledge is great, it's the rest of these ass clowns I don't trust. We are so used to hiding who we really are and presenting a carefully constructed face to the world that our judgement of others is naturally based on the same behavior. It is the rare person to whom you could reveal ALL of your secrets without completely alienating them...what are the chances that person happens to work for the FBI or the NSA? Broadly invasive government would turn us into a nation of freaks, not because we deserve that classification, but because we've been bred to think of anything out of the ordinary as "bad".

So Obama is a proponent of the Real ID act and also wants to give illegal immigrants licenses, did he read what he voted on in the Senate?

You must not have read the Real ID Act of 2005. Yeah its a bill from 2005.

The Feds arent issuing a national id. They are making the states conform to having the same information and same level of security on their drivers licenses.

Its not a new federal database and its not a federal issued ID. Its still states that are issuing the ids and maintaining the databases. They just have to conform to the minimum govt standards for information and security. Several states already did prior to the Real ID act.

Hell no. I think it leads to a gross loss of privacy with the almost certainty of abuse by the government and otherwise. Not only that, but the federal government is pushing this mandate on the states that do not want it. It is an unfunded mandate which infringes on powers traditionally in state hands. No thanks... May it go down in flames...

Its not unfunded. Originally you would be correct. The 2005 Real ID Act was unfunded. The Dems funded it in 2007. As for going down in flames.

Its already been passed into law, you are three years late.

Who ever thinks this puts drivers licenses information or issuance to the Feds has been horribly misled and should go read the bill themselves.

I say no we don't need so I'm against it, but damn why not I mean it's only going to costs a a few $billion. The more our government spends and the bigger it gets the more inept we become. As you can see almost no states or people support it, but hey whatever. If you don't see it then I'll be glad to take the life raft headed to New Zealand.

That doesn't make it a good idea. Oh, it's not a horrible privacy invasion? Well that's all I need to approve of it

What are they invading?

Tell me.

Right now theres a big push internationally(not by the US, but by the UN/Interpol) to more or less standardize passports with much TIGHTER security. I can see that as being an issue.

But if you read the Real ID act, its not the things some people are saying it is. It also isn't going to cost billions. And like I said, some states already meet the criteria prior to its passage.

I had a thread about it for NC.

Retards in washington think they own us like cattle.

Retards?

Shit, they do own you! Wesley Snipes forgot and they are about to own his ass, literally.

Let them try to make that claim.

PC if you are going to be part of the system, the system will own you. If you are willing to denounce the system, start young, invest in gold, and good luck to you! I even know people who exist without a social security number! They wrote their representative and enclosed their card and said they'd no longer like to participate!

Crazy stuff!
