Do you suffer from Sinus headaches?

I think I still have a lingering cold. It's been 2 weeks, almost 3 weeks, now that I've had a cold on-and-off (coupled with some productive coughs, etc.)

Right now, it's the sinus headaches (sinusitis) that's getting to me. My right maxillary sinus cavity hurts and there's tenderness/pain in my right frontal sinus cavity as well. 🙁

I'm trying to stay away from medicine because I want my immune system to fight it, but I'm to the point of wimping out. I'm also following the home treatments provided here, but I think it's a slow process (or am I just impatient?)

Anyone else suffering sinus attacks like these, and what do you normally do?

Unabridged version:
Getting sinus attacks.
Do you have the same ailment?
I need some suggestions on remedies/treatments/medicine you take.

Thanks in advance.

I have horrible allergies and sinus issues.I'm thinking of sucking on the business end of a shotgun to finally fix the problem once and for all, nothing else works.

I take a sudafed/pseudoephedrine to clear the congestion and if necessary, ibuprofen/alleve for the pain.
I believe that medication helps your immune system fight back and helps you rest and keep your strength up. It's not like Sudafed has the power to kill viral phages, so it's not like you are letting some drug do the work your antibodies ought to be doing.

I actually feel like getting a 1/4" drill and drilling that part of my face that needs to be relieved off the pressure >.<

Just use a drill with a 1-inch masonary bit. Worked for me! 😀

Whenever I get one I take sudafed and guaifenesine to help clear the sinuses. A lot of sinus infections are viral, not bacterial so antibiotics should only be used as a last resort. I only go to the doctor if it's been a least 2 weeks and I still can't get rid of it taking the sudafed and guaifenesine.

My girlfriend does all the time...

she always has a bottle of "Advil - cold and sinus" in her purse...

I however, never get headaches...

I'd sure hate to have migraines, they're much worse...

I think that somewhat makes me feel better... I mean, this could be worse, right?

some remedies I'm trying:
Drinking loads of water/tea/liquids
Putting a warm, wet towel on my face (it feels good for a while until you remove it 'cuz you can't breathe!)

Try Sudafed or its generic equivalent, get that stuff to drain out of your sinuses. If you let it build up, you risk a sinus/ear infection, which will require antibiotics after a trip to the doctor. That will have more of an effect on your immune system than Sudafed would.

Been there, done that.

Edit: Don't take an antihistamine - it will compound the blockage and pressure.

Yep. I've also had migraines, and some of the sinus headaches are just as bad.

I do the home stuff (HOT showers, heat pad, liquids, advil cold-n-sinus etc) and try to take care of myself. Advil plus Tylenol is the best OTC pain killer, and for me it has to be the brand name combo, the generics aren't as effective. YMMV. I've had plenty of trial-and-error and this combo works best for me.

Sleep is the best cure. To sleep, I use vicodin. I've never found a doc who'll prescribe it for sinuses, but I get it for my back, and use it very seldom, so I always have a few on hand.

Thanks. I'm going to go buy (or have someone bring home) some Sudafed today. The good news is, I'm spitting out the mucus every other minute. The bad news is, it's discolored mucus (gross). 😱

My allergist recommended something that worked well for me since I don't have allergies and just sinus problems. It's a non-steriodal inhaler that is essentially an anti-inflammatory. I cannot remember the name of the medication offhand. I hope it's not addictive b/c I would go nuts without it (perhaps that means it is addictive, I don't know).

Update (if you cared):
I feel much better now. I took a combination of Sudafed Non-Drying Sinus liquid caps and ate foods rich in bromelain, flavonoids and vitamin C.

Plus, I had some yummy Thai Tom Yum Koong soup (3-days in a row, for breakfast, lunch, and supper) to clear those nasty sinus cavities 😉
