Do you suffer from excessive computer usage?

I'm seeing my therapist for the first time and I'm circling off the personal issues that I'm now facing. I came across excessive computer usage and I did a double take! I thought to myself... "Hmm do I spend a lot of time on the computer?" We'll if spending 6-8 hours a day on the computer (non-work related) is an issue then I guess I need help! Therefore, I circled it and we talked about my computer usage. I told her that I spend on an average 6-8 hours a day playing computer games and surfing the internet. She feels that I'm using the computer as a way to escape from the personal issues that I'm now facing (isolation, financial issues, behavioral and so on...) I'm acting like a drug addict! I might not be abusing my body like a drug addict but my excessive computer usage is affecting my way of living.

So is excessive computer usage affecting your life? Are you putting off doing chores, class work, neglecting the girlfriend/wife, etc... This might be an issue for some of the forum members that post here so if it is you should get the help that you probably desperately need.

🙁

Sounds like your therapist wants to make sure you keep throwing money at her. It's only a problem when it prevents you from getting things done or maintaining normal relationships.

I think if you've got the spare time and you like using your computer it isn't a big deal or a clinical problem.

Yes. And the easiest way to control it is by not starting the computer. Once I get started, kiss my time goodbye. Unfortunately, most of us in AT use the PC for work and/or school, so this isn't a practical sol'n.

I got home from work at 10:30 EST and I've already been on non-stop! It's 12:50 EST now and I need sleep but here I am typing away.

🙂

Plus Freedom Force, Age of Mythology and UT2K4 are all calling me!! I need to show more self restraint but I can't.

Aside from being at the computer almost all day at work, I spend 2-3 hours a night on the computer at home. That's usually just during the weekdays though when I don't have anything better to do. I rarely just sit there and surf aimlessly. I'm usually researching something, searching for something specific to download, gaming, or talking. It's almost always usage with a purpose so I don't feel like an addict.

I like it that way though, spend less money during the week so I can and go out and get away from computers on my weekends. When I go out of town I don't even miss it.

I had this conversation last night with a friend... personally yes I do 'use' the computer a lot. However it has become my favourite entertainment medium if you will, so I don't feel that bad when I think of how much TV some people watch. I know, that is like saying "I don't feel guilty being a drug addict, look at all the alkies." It definitely affects other aspects of my life, moreso in the winter when I can't golf or do something outside. Wintertime = computer time all the time.

Yep. The hours just melt by when I'm on the computer! I can fire up a game and 2 hours will just melt by so quickly!

really easy to fix your problem. Trade your current video card for a geforce 2mx or somthing really crappy. Tada problem solved!

Agreed. In the winter I'm almost always on a computer on off-time. In the summer I like to golf, bike, go out to dinner, movies, putt-putt, arcades, play basketball. But in the harsh Michigan winter, computer is your friend.

Oh I'm tempted to just throw out my computer and games but I'm not going to resort to those measures. I love technology! I love computer gaming! I just need to do it in moderation. Instead of spending 6 hours on the computer I should cut it off at 2 hours.

How do you afford computer games if you are broke?

I'll wait a year to buy the newer games. A new $40-50 game will only cost $10-20 in a year's time frame.
