Do you still need username/password for DSL?

I haven't used DSL in awhile. The last time I used it no username/pw was required. However, I think a few months before that, username/pw was required, so I'm not sure if that's because it was diff't counties (tho' Verizon in both cases), or if they just removed this step?

THat's why I don't understand why some people I know in NYC with Verizon don't need user/pass.

Nope, don't need one. Funny thing is, the instructions I got with the modem kept mentioning user/pass. The tech support guy was like "huh"?
