I'm thinking about picking up a new bad habit. I've been downloading the trial version (which is effen huge) and it sounds like I can just buy a cd-key through the trial without having to pick up a retail copy of the game.

It might be cheaper if you bought the retail versions rather than through Blizz, but ya most MMOs have free downloadable trials that are the full versions of the game, then just require you to purchase a retail key if you wish to continue playing. When I say full version though, that may not include stuff like FMV, high-res textures, some voice-acting etc. Not sure what Blizz is charging for retail keys but I'm pretty sure I saw original + xpac for $13.99 each over in hot deals for this week.

If I remember correctly, the latter is cheaper by a few cents. I was trying to convince a friend to play and I looked at the differences while we were in the store.

I'd just go to those aforementioned sites. They're quite a bit better than a book as I've seen the WoW strategy guides and the dungeon guide... they're quite lame.

EDIT: Not to mention my previous post was more of a joke about how bad the guides are or more or less, how worthless they are in comparison to the WoW databases you'll find on the web.

Not sure how blizzard packages the game anymore. Last I installed it was all CD's with xpac.

I now download the trial and log into my wow acct through the webpage and download the xpac.

Throw it onto a dvd/ 2 with the latest full patch and its much easier on reinstallation.

Yeah, I usually put it on an external. It's soooooo much better than trying to reinstall everything and then getting all your add-ons and redoing all of your settings :p.

Those guides were rather useless, a friend of mine sent me a bunch of sites that were much more useful. The battle chest saved me like 10 bucks over all since it was 20 for WoW and 30 for BC. The trial installer was taking forever to download. I think the hotel caps the bandwidth, it took me about 8-9 hours to download a third of it.

Ahh at Wal-Mart, they're both $19.74 or something like that where the full "battle chest" is $39.99. Not really a difference, but yeah, guides for MMOs tend to be worthless because you're in a mutable world that you aren't necessarily affecting. Also, you can get hints that a guide won't even think of because instead of a handful of people contributing to the guide, you get a decent chunk of the player base.

Fortunately, sites like wowhead also avoid "ZOMG HUNTAR WEAPON!"

Yeah that drove me nuts. It took forever to install the games and then I had to download 2 huge patches on my slow ass connection.

I did that to all the PTR patches that I used to have :p. Now I only have a couple haha. The reason I kept most of the patches is because I used to run private servers when I got bored and I'd jump on 'em and play around. Usually they'd be patches behind, so you'd need a specific version to play (that wasn't the current one). So this way it could say, "Oh I need 1.7... no problem."
