do you still have a cd collection?

if so, how do you store it?

I've got about 500 cd's spread throughout my apartment... I've got a cd shelf unit in my bedroom that holds about a third of them, but the rest are either crammed onto a bookshelf alongside my paperbacks or still unpacked in boxes from when I moved (in my old apartment, I had an entertainment center with a ton of media storage space in it, but that got thrown out in the move because I have a bay window in the perfect location for my tv)

I'm thinking it's probably time to burn them all onto my desktop, decide on a cloud music solution (wtb google music invite?) and retire the physical cd's to permanent storage.

even boxed up, though, this many CD's takes up a ton of space and it's not as if I live in a house where I can just throw them in the attic and forget about them.

I'd like something more polished looking than a binder (and ideally something with space to store the liner notes) but is there a compromise to be had between a crappy looking binder and something super expensive like this? or should I just suck it up and pay $300 to reorganize my cd collection and free up space in my apartment?

Mine are scattered around :^D

I don't know what I'll do with them, but I'll definitely keep them somewhere. Sometimes I rip them to my machine, and other times just torrent them.Sometimes I don't feel like hunting them down. My organization used to be impeccable, but I have a hard time keeping track of them any more.

I actually need to go through all my cd's and throw out the cases that don't have discs anymore.

All my CDs have been put into iTunes and are still stored where they have been for the past 14+ years: In a drawer made for CDs in our custom-made media cabinet. The cabinet use to be in the living room of our old house. Now it is in our bedroom.

I have no plans on getting rid of the CDs as I would then be legally obligated to delete them from my computer.

Yep. I don't have any sort of MP3 player...never felt a need for one, but I have copied a few CDs onto my computer so I can listen to them while I'm on the computer.
I don't listen to music very often anymore, and it's rare that I listen to anything except classical music...but once in a while, I'll use youtube to take a trip down memory lane...and listen to either classical rock, or classical country. (both no later than the mid-70's)
Sometimes, one of those wanderings will lead me to one of the CDs I have...rock or country...and I'll listen to that for a while.

Music CDs are stacked in a desk drawer, I buy them when I like 4 or more songs on one album for the audio quality. They've all been ripped to my PC/mp3 player though.

I only owned about 20 CDs at my peak. Napster came out once I started to have money to actually buy CDs.

Heck yeah, I still have a CD collection. 300+ and counting.

Before MP3's there were CDs. After Napster there were CDs. I will admit this: Out of all the music I have obtained in the past 5-7 years, 90% of it has been through mostly legal downloads, with the occasional rip of my friend's CDs. When buying music online first appeared you were lucky if the MP3 was 128KB/s. Now the standard Amazon download is 256KB/s, which is pretty decent. When I rip a CD I rip at 320KB/s which is indistinguishable from the actual CD and I have a nice home stereo system. 256KB/s is close enough. I won't buy music if it's not at least 256KB/s.

Just ordered a bunch of CDs 2 days ago. I have hundreds of CDs, and found the bands whose CDs I just got through youtube and 'illegal' downloading.

No. Ripped what i wanted and binned them all, along with my old cassettes and vinyls. I only keep hold of the things i use.

I have a big CD binder with all of my CDs.
I threw away all of the jewel cases over 10 years ago.

Trust me... they will never be worth anything.
Some rare vinyls are worth money simple because they are rare.
CD production was 100x what vinyl was, so there won't be rare CDs.
Plus, vinyl is collectible because it is analog and more "true". CDs are the same as mp3s, audibly.

ok... whatever makes you happy.

I still have every CD I have ever purchased. 6/9 of them are Star Wars (3 are double CD's), 1 is Star Trek, 1 is Steppenwolf, 1 is Iron Butterfly, 1 is Audioslave, and I have a Linkin Park CD.

in boxes yes, i still buy them and then i rip them to FLAC and V0 MP3s and stick the CD in a box, most likely never to be seen again

I have hundreds of CDs and I've never thought once "hm, these will be worth billions one day." I buy CDs because:

1. I like the band(s) even though they make little off a sale.
2. I hate downloading music.
3. I like most of the cover art.
4. I like reading the inserts.
5. I don't give a damn about Vinyl's "audio quality" being 0.05% better than a CD. Most people can't tell the difference.

I like having my CDs displayed in the original jewel cases for easy access. Even with my sizable collection, it doesn't take up THAT much room. My DVD/Blu-Ray collection, on the other hand, is out of control...

I don't really have much of a collection, but I do still have a number of them. I just got a CD this week actually. Sometimes I like having the CD, booklet and such. I probably only have ~30 physical CDs still.

Mostly same here. Restarted collecting CDs after discovering music/bands through the Internet. I rarely pay full price though (15+&#8364😉, only when there's something I really want. A lot of them are bought used or from a sale.

The CDs are sitting on shelves just to show what an amazing taste I have 😛, but not used after they've been ripped to FLACs.

edit: Actually right now I'm trying to decide if I should go through hundreds of CD-R(W)s or just throw them out. Even backup DVD's are starting to take up too much space.

Ironically, I was just cleaning out my room this morning and found about 200 cds on spindles that I'm deciding on what to do with. I threw out the jewel boxes long ago. Was considering listing the titles with a few pics and putting them up on ebay, but not sure it's even worth the trouble. Though I do have a few rare industrial cds from back in the late 80s/early 90s.
