Do you still do all-nighters?

Ha!

I surprised myself doing one recently.

Woke up at 7AM, had my day of work as usual (last Friday), came back home. Then I did a couple of things here and there outside of gaming, and then came the "gaming time". I bought BioShock Infinite during last year's (yeah I have to say that now) Steam holidays sale. I had started my Infinite game already the week before and played it in short bursts of maybe 20 minute sessions each.

So, since last Friday I had nothing better to do than to play PC games I told myself "Infinite... hmmm... yeah let's play that". I started to play it at around 9PM or so. I knew I'd play it a lot since I wanted to really progress my game (because I liked it enough to do that, obviously). So I made myself a coffee (which I rarely drink at such hours, if I do drink coffee it's usually after I wake up or in the afternoon usually not past 5 or 6PM), took a snack (salted peanuts, no shell, and doritos my friends, freakin' doritos) and started "the session".

Well, I played and... played. Went to the bathroom I think one time? Not sure, maybe two. But other than that I just sat and played (and drank, and ate). I do sometimes "miss" my bed time hour by maybe 30 mins or one hour or so when I play a game I like, but I normally do "monitor" my clock (either on the PC by alt-tabbing back to the desktop or by checking my watch which I leave on my desk normally near my keyboard when I don't feel like wearing it). That time I of course knew that I was playing well past my bed time but I didn't realize at that point that the sun was starting to rise...

So basically I played until 8:47AM that Saturday morning (that's when I looked at my watch and just went " O_O !! "). It was my first all-nighter since... hmmm... two years or so? The last time I remember skipping bed time was for Skyrim (as far as PC games are concerned).

Now, today... I feel sort of upside down, kinda. I don't exactly feel "good". I think I'll need a couple of days (two or three, at least) to let's say... rejuvenate from such an ordeal. I'm not 20 years-old anymore... can't afford to do it often. Ironically though, I didn't actually do many all-nighters anyway when I was younger... well I did a couple but not on a regular basis (the big difference, however, is that now... since a couple of years anyway when I do it I sure feel the effects of it the following few days... which wasn't really the case when I did it in my 20's).

So do you guys still do it? If you do, how do you feel afterward? Can still run the marathon the next day and call it a night? Or do you need a whole week to recover?

By the way, you don't have to tell your age...

I don't think I've ever done an all nighter. I may have played as late as 2 or 3 am though, but even that was probably 15 years ago playing EQ.

Very rarely nowadays, though last year there were two or 3 times when the wife and I went to bed when the sun had come up - I had to give the dog her morning walk before heading to bed 🙂
Usually it's just 2 or 3 am the latest these days, but sometimes you just have so much fun in game that you keep going.
The next day is usually fine - the key I find is to wake up after 4 or 5 hours, do a few things, eat some lunch and then have a nap (afterall, I aint in my 20s anymore either!) then feel revitalised come the early evening. I find just having a really long sleep after an all nighter is not as satisfying

Friday, I played Van Helsing II until about 11:30p. Started at around 8pm, I believe. Hopped in the bed. About an hour later I had to wake up to pick up my son from school after a wrestling tournament. Got home around 1am. Jumped back into bed, but all I could hear was my wife talking in her sleep. Then I heard the dog wimpering in his sleep. Then the stupid cat started licking himself. That's it! Couldn't handle all the noise. Got up and started playing Helsing again until about 4am. Went back to bed for an hour. Got up to take my son back to school for the second day of the wrestling tourney at around 5:30a. Got back home around 6am. Played for another hour, then my mind and body had had enough. Went back to bed for about 3 hours. Saturday ended up being a zoned-out day.

That's probably the closest I've come to an all-nighter in years - I'm 45 now. Back in my college years, I could easily do a 24 hour stint, as long as work didn't get in the way.

no-lifed a couple of mmos when i was younger, talked a lot of shit on the forums so had to back that up. days of 16+ hour straight leveling to get ahead of the pack, mostly spent at night.

now ive got some hardcore insomnia, its 3:33 am and there's work in the morning.

I would if I still played FFXIV but thats why I don't play anymore.

I don't play all night any more but I do play all day often on weekends. On saturday I played Civ BE from about 1 until about 8:30 nonstop. That's about as long as I can go with a single game, though now that I finally got GTA IV working on my PC that might change soon.

Don't think I ever have. My attention span won't hold up that long. Think the latest I've stayed up gaming was 2am.

I used to, as a teenager. But really only for a handful of games. You know, the "crack" of games:

Civilization
Master of Orion
Flight Sims
Elder Scrolls
Total War

..etc.

I don't anymore. I still love gaming, and it's probably my favorite hobby, but I honestly can't play any game for more than an hour or two tops before needing to do something else. I just feel restless playing one game for too long, even if I have the free time (which is rare anyway).

I will say this; It's MUCH easier and MUCH more fun playing during bad weather, especially in the winter. Snow storms are the BEST motivation for me. It's all psychological, but then I don't feel so bad if I just lock myself in gaming for a few hours and not worry about going out if I have the option.

I'm 45 and I still do all-nighters (though usually I stop myself around 5am). Typically when I'm playing Europa Universalis 4 or Crusader Kings 2.

I will sometimes get engrossed and be up until like 7AM or so before going to bed, but not often. Well, I generally stay up until 7AM, just not playing games.

I generally have to call it quits when the GF goes to bed (usually around 2AM) when I am playing Fifa, but that is usually because I tend to get a bit over zealous.

been over a decade since I have done any of that foolishness.

I have done some work all nighters but that was no fun

You shouldn't feel guilty unless you're neglecting your duties. IMO, it's Ok to do once in a long while. It beats going out and getting drunk.

I've done all nighters before, but not too much now. I might game from 10pm to 2am but that's about it. The thing is your day is pretty much shot, so if I was going to stay up all night I'd make sure I didn't have anything to do.

The last time I did an all nighter was 2 years ago when I was in South Korea. I discovered Skyrim and the rest is history. I also remember when I discovered the Walking Dead. I've never seen the show before. I sat thru 12 hours mesmerized telling myself that this was the best zombie show ever!

Does staying up until 4am because I woke up at 1pm count?

Seriously, not since the second last semester of college.

Not since the Genesis/SNES days. If I did not have to work, I would probably give it a shot. Would probably do all-night movie marathons too.

I've never done one. Sometimes I may have gone to 5am which is close I suppose, but I would always get a couple of hours sleep.

I did that back on my original NES playing final fantasy. Now days if I try that, I would probably waked up with asleep with a dead character on the screen.

I pulled an all nighter last weekend. I thought it was the easiest way to trick my body into sleeping at night instead of being late for work and spending the night laying awake.

Friday I stayed up until Saturday at noon.
Then I slept from noon to like 8 Saturday..
Then I was up until 8pm Sunday evening, slept and woke up at like 8am Monday, refreshed and ready to go ...

Today is the first time I woke up at 8am and felt good/alive like 8am was a time people are supposed to be alive in many many months....

All the time..simply because my job requires working 12 hour shifts at night every other month. I never played any of the bioshock games and I have all three on my computer ready to go....kids are at their mothers this week, winter in Iowa, guess what Im gonna do starting wed night?? 😀

I used to do it about once a month, has probably been at least 5 years since I have.

Not even gaming much recently at all though I guess.
