No, but spitting is not as bad as seeing someone hold one of their nostrils shut with their index finger and blowing a glob of snot from the other nostril with a strong exhale.
I do that in the shower. It feels great!

As others mentioned, when allergies & stuff kick in to have clear breathing passage. I try to avoid in public/around others as much as possible.
I find that blowing my nose does absolutely nothing to help allergy problems. The nose isn't blocked by snot. It's blocked by inflammation. Blowing my nose does nothing but taking a hand full of ephedrine fixes that like clockwork.

Snot rockets!!

That was pretty common with construction workers. I always thought it was pretty disgusting. I always carried a handkerchief myself...but those can also be pretty disgusting after they're used. Carrying a rag full of snot and boogers? Yum.

Not in public no I might if I'm outside at home. Also chewing is far more disgusting that just spitting whatever your body produces naturally.

Wait, what?

Are we talking about spitting on the ground? Yeah... I spit on the ground. If I get something from the upper part of my mouth to fly down then I usually spit it out (You know, snot, etc). I don't swallow it because sometimes it doesn't actually clear the airways. (Somehow it manages to go back to bad, I don't get it)

Swallow, I hear you need the protein.

I spit quite a bit if I'm outdoors. I would rather spit than swallow a big ball of saliva.
It's mainly because I grew up with hillbillies and everyone did it.

A 'Texas Hankie'.

I do not spit, even while playing sports. The only times I have ever spit is if I got something foul in my mouth or, oddly, when I feel like throwing up.

My mother had a huge problem with spitting when I was a kid, so I kept it confined to the sports field.

Reminds of a kid in school who knew how to 'gleek'. Anyone else heard of gleeking? It is a silent way to project a very tiny amount of spit accurately and with range. I think it was around 7th grade or so. Anyway, he could gleek at someone like 5 or 6 desks away silently and without getting caught. Immature of course, but funny at that age when the target is an asshole and keeps looking up at the ceiling for a leak in the roof.

I also don't really get the purpose of constantly spitting.
One of the kids that was at my bus stop during middle school spit constantly. Don't know why.
Maybe his saliva glands extruded a mix of saliva and hair snippets.

How do you even pick up the habit? Does it develop as a childhood remedy for excessive drooling, due to a failure to figure out the swallowing reflex?

Or is it just a manifestation of a primitive territory-marking urge?

This made me laugh more than it should have.:$

I only spit when I'm jogging. Saliva gets built up and swallowing breaks my breathing. I make sure to spit in the street though as opposed to on the sidewalk.

The asian badboys at my school always hung out on the street by the school after school to smoke and spit.
I thought the spitting had something to do with smoking. But then most people who smoke don't have an urge to constantly hock loogies.
