I'm watching the best of Ramens in Japan show and everyone slurps. Even a few white people who are on the showing are doing it too.

I just found out the Japanese word for peanut is PEA-NASU.

supposingly it is a manner/etiquttie for noodle-eaters in Japan to slurp as a respect to the chief. I heard that from non-Japanese ppl so I cannnot really validate its truthfulness.

for me, I tried not to slurp but often failed to do so :)

I am not sure about the entire asian population would slurp when they eat noodles, or they just have no manners :p

Seems like every Japanese ramen shops are very small, and people line up like fools for a 500+ yen bowl of ramen.

Most the ramens are pretty much the same, garnished with spring onions, pickled bamboo shoots, and sliced roast pork. The only difference is the soup stock.

coz the only ramen stores you get to see are on TV. and of course the TV show will film the ones packed with customers and not the empty going-out-of-busniess ones.

Definitely not in my house. I'll get "slapped" for slurping. It's table manners dude :)

Pretty cheap and quick meal ($4.50) considering a meal deal at McDonalds cost $5.50+. The hotel i stayed at in Tokyo Shinjuku meals were extreemly expensive;

breakfast $27
lunch $45
dinner $75

Of course it is. Use the chopsticks to hold a fair amount of noodles and shove it right into your mouth. Try not to slurp when the noodles are in, instead cut it off with yer teeth and begin chewing. That'll reduce the slurping a fair amount :)

yeah, same. For azn's it's ok to slurp, same with soup and stuff. It's not that we don't have manners, I think that it's just a matter of eating your food and enjoying it. Plus most chinese people get their roots from not-so-wealthy families, so manners like that are not a big deal.

I'm Asian(Korean) and find that slurping thing annoying as hell. It's not really an Asian thing as I know many Asian people find that slurping thing annoying.

I hate it when people deliberately slurp, makes me want to slap them in the face.

no, I don't slurp when I eat noodle. It is not really polite to make noise when you eat.
