I had a demented friend who suggested that having noise in the background makes you sleep better and so he turns on the fan before bedtime. me assume that the more noise in the background meaning people talking, shouting will put him in a coma or deep sleep :)

Not with a computer.
I hate silence, and a computer fan is still like silence to me, because it's a constant sound with no room for interaction.
I always have music playing when I'm trying to get to sleep, as it's more immersive, you can sing along in your head if you want.
I can't stand silence or a noise such as a fan running.

My roommate is the exact opposite, but I am like you. I am used to sleeping with the TV on..or music..but pretty much HAS to sleep with his fan on..and he leaves it on..the entire day...

2 Computers + 2 Fans on while I sleep. When I was young I had hamsters that'd run on their wheels all night and got used to it, converted to computers later on.

I have learned to sleep with noise. During college (up to 2 years ago), I had as many as 7 computers running in my dorm room at once, 24/7. And last year, I was living in NYC in an APT room w/o AC on a major Avenue so I kept my window open. I love the noise. The quiet is freakin weird, maaaan.

i sleep with my computer turned off, in the dorms my freshman year, i had a dragonorb cpu cooler running max speed, and my tower was under my bed.

i personally usually like to fall asleep to the tv, but my new roommates don't and prefer total silence, i'm trying to get used to it.

I can't sleep in complete silence...

I can't sleep with music on though, because I sing in my head and won't get to sleep...

I like to sleep in 100% darkness with my fan blowing on me...

Which is where I'm headed right about now...

I leave my pc on, but I turn the fan up to medium and turn the tv on. That usually puts me to sleep, depending on how tired I am, in 30 min. to 1 hr.

I sleep with my computer on, and I usually have an episode of MST3K running on it. I fall asleep easier like that.

Yep, I moved the computers out of my bedroom after college, so now I have a fan that I turn on when I go to sleep.

With a fan or something running, you don't get 'interrupted' by all the other quiet noises that you might hear to distrub you. As far as sleeping with the radio/tv on - I'd never fall asleep. I'll lay there listening to whatever it is and thinking about it for hours, then at like 5 am I'll freak out, turn it off, and pass out asleep. <-- used to have an ex-gf who would always put the radio on, drove me insane

Sometimes I need silence to fall asleep, but it doesn't matter to me most of the time (especially when tired).

I used to be able to sleep fine with a computer that housed several 60mm fans left on throughout the night. After I went on vacation for a few months, and slept in a silent enviroment, I got used to the quiet. When I returned couldn't stand the whir of the fans any longer and had to shut my computer down in order to gall asleep. So I eventually switched over to an Antec Sonata and everything has been gravy ever since.
