Do you save threads? Parts of threads?

I have a database table with choice posts or thread links. I also don't delete the posts I get from forums, they go in a specific "Forums" folder in my email client, which I can search for strings within the posts or their titles.

I was just checking out something in my table of special posts/links and ran across this (I'm not in the habit of reposting other people's posts willy nilly, but just have to this one). This was at Rotten Tomatoes Forums, which have pretty much turned to crap. They screwed up that site so bad... you couldn't find old threads with your links, I could not log in for years, they fucked up the login system so badly, and I got zero help from their "mods."

Well, there was a thread titled: 7 facts about you and this was in it:
------------------------------------
1. I think execution is great. In fact, more low lives should be knocked off without mercy.

Amen, but I'm biased. This is rather morose but....

1. My first cousin was raped and murdered, living a week first in 1984. My uncle died of a stroke during the trial. My taxes are still paying the criminal's prison expenses to this day.

2. My best friend in high school was hit with a sawed-off 12 ga. while visiting his girlfriend at a stop-n-rob.

3. I've only lived in two cities, both have always been in the top ten of violent crimes per population (Flint, Mich & Detroit).

4. I once exploded a man's privates with my boot when he pulled a knife on me. It left him sterile, per what the police told me during the trial.

5. My college girlfriend was killed by a drunk driver. He was well off and served no jail time. I stalked him for a while before being caught, cuffed and counciled. No charges were pressed.

6. I've been a pallbearer at seven funerals, all were victims of violent deaths.

7. The above had made me very streetwise and aware of my surroundings. I remain unafraid in any position encountered. I would have zero problem with throwing the switch, dropping the trapdoor or plunging the syringe for a felon. I would lose no sleep over the fact.

Okay, back to your regularly scheduled thread. So let's hear more bi-sexual stories!!!
------------------------------------

I don't think those 2 posters would mind being reposted, and besides, I'm not posting their usernames.

Copy, paste, email to myself in Gmail for future search along with a link to the original thread. Usually for build threads or recipe threads.

Nope. Then it leaves a digital trail of my stalking archiving.

You are a hoarder.
Not exactly, but I do have a lot of stuff I need to get rid of. I eschew tons of stuff that other people accumulate, always have. I am attracted to useful things. Some things lose their usefulness and I should get rid of them therefore. That includes acquaintances, so watch your step! :D

You can't imagine how useful it is to be able to save certain information digitally. It's an extension of my nervous system. I'd need to be some kind of freak to have the ability to remember all the stuff at my command with my computer.

OP is a gangstalker
WTF is that?

I can't say anymore for I do not wish to be on your database anymore than I already am.

Don't gangstalk me bro.

I don't archive threads or posts but I do have a "quotes.txt" file that I put particularly good, interesting, or funny quotes in. There's a few entries from ATOT. I don't update it very often though.

No, but I did save some rather poignant PM's from friends here. People who no longer post.
I think even those are long gone, but the act of saving them from what I figured to be a frail medium seemed appropriate at the time.

OP - you need evernote.
I have it, I just haven't figured out how to use it, haven't spent much time getting to know it. I figure that it might be a great solution/help to me, but am totally uncertain about it. I have it on my Nokia 520 Windows phone, guess I installed something on at least one of my computers.

I have a pretty elaborate database system where I save information and it incorporates a pretty fancy set of search algorithms. It's not Google, it's different, and of course, it only looks within my own data. I can ask it to find entries with any or all of up to three different character strings, case sensitive or case insensitive, my call. It will search the table of my choice and it's easy to create new tables, move or copy data from one table to another. I can modify tables, have wildly different capabilities and run custom code to support a really staggering variety of requirements.

There are distinct groupings of tables, and I can move tables from one group to another, should I want to, and there are other features I've built into it. Could I do all that with Evernote? Doubtful. At the moment, that system isn't accessible from my cell phone, however I bought a tablet/laptop combo recently that will accommodate it when I get around to setting it up.

You need to install a browser plug-in for it to work with . . . well, a browser. After that you need to choose if you want the default save location to be cloud or PC. PC should synch with cloud when you run evernote. I like the pc interface better so I use that. It has a pretty robust search engine and even with about 7000 clips, it does a pretty good job on my i7-2600k w/ 16gig ram.

I used to save threads. When I worked at a company that wouldn't allow me to do anything personal on their Internet, and I didn't have a smartphone, I downloaded threads onto my laptop each morning. Thankfully, I didn't work there very long. :)

The OP would be a perfect fit to takeover at-wiki.com if it didn't die a slow and lonely death.

Don't let your imagination run away with you. I only track information of special interest to me. Much of it I never access, will never read again. But very frequently I have an interest in something and I can find out what I want to know by accessing the data I've saved. A very small percentage of this is links to whatever, including threads. I don't know but a very very small percentage of what goes on at Anandtech Forums, and many of the most popular threads I know basically nothing or actually nothing about. That's not to say they aren't great, I'm certain that many of them are, but I have to prioritize, I can't worry about what I'm missing by not trying to keep abreast of what all is going on.

I'll give just a small example of what I do in my data:

I have a table for my car. If I want to know what I've done on my car and when, I just do a search on whatever, e.g. tires, transmission.

I have a table for my bicycle, one for my roller skates. I take care of these myself.

Anything that I do or have that has complex information concerning it that I'm apt to forget by the time I need access to that information, I can store in a table specific to the subject. I have no interest in gaining power by cornering some area of public interest. I distrust power, always have. "Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely." I really just want to be a happy, successful, fulfilled guy living a blissful life. :) And above all, I feel it's essential to be passionate, passionate about something.

I don't mean to harp on this, but please, please check out Evernote. Instead of creating tables you can setup folders. So for example you could create a folder for "mechanical" items and then under that separate folders for bike, car, hoverboard, etc.

The only real problem is that you can only have one level of nesting or basicially 2 levels of folders. So you can have folders inside folders but not any more levels than those 2.

Evernote is very easy to use and pretty intuitive. Plus everything is automatically backed up to the cloud - if you want it to be. I don't think it requires you to do that, but you really should.

Only time I will save a thread is if I think the information in it is useful, and/or contains difficult to find/very specific technical advice that I may need to refer to later; especially if it is obscure enough that I think it may disappear eventually.

That's pretty much my philosophy. There's got to be some tangible payoff to "saving" a thread or a snippet of it or else you are just creating problems for yourself. Of course, there's no clear criteria, it's just a spur of the moment thing. Many is the time, however, when I wished I'd saved something (link to a thread or some information that's personal to me about something in my life that I might revisit down the line for whatever reason) but failed to do so, felt that I really should have!

I saw Muse in Toronto a few weeks back. They played a good show but I don't remember them saying anything about executions. Not directly anyway.
