Do you run Google Desktop?

I don't know at this point if it was preinstalled on my new notebook (Acer 6530-6522), or got installed when I downloaded and installed Firefox. Is this worth it? Valuable? Or is it more trouble than it's worth. Obviously it takes some processing power to continually index the system's information.

I run Windows Search because it hooks into Office 2007 well and I prefer its search results window (Google Desktop uses the web browser for results, so you loose right-click context menus).

I liked it in XP for the sidebar, but that's about it. I don't search much, and I like Vista's sidebar better, so I ditched it.

nope. i try to organize my stuff so i know where it is for the most part so i never really thought i needed it.

This, although with emails the Windows search hooks in well within outlook to be useful.

i prefer windows search.
google desktop was interesting when i was trying it instead of copernic(copernic is now sh*t forget about it.)
but having google upload the index was annoying, and their "need" to freaking force everything into a web format of links when that was far from the most efficient way to display information on files was the deal breaker. esp with pictures/videos etc the link webpage format was a total fail. plus windows search is just very fast and well optimized, very low system burden compared to the other indexing stuff i've tried in the past.

Windows search doesn't work for all files, in particular the FoxPro tables I use a whole lot. For those I use Agent Ransack, a free download. It has some nice features including instant access to the file when searching for included text. And I do mean instant (displays in right hand panel).

Guess I'll uninstall Google Desktop, I'm trying to cut the crap out of my new notebook, for-now file server.

win search has its issues. selecting/deselecting file types is a freakin chore for one. but its still better than google desktop. i don't want to look at my files in my browser..its just ridiculous. i guess it shows what happens when something is designed with artificial limitations/requirements.
google should have designed the most awesome desktop search program totally ignoring any web aspect at first, and perhaps added that later. what they did was try to force the desktop and web together in a rather artificial way instead of do the best solution possible.

windows desktop search hotkey is windowskey+shift+f 😉

When I do that nothing happens. If my desktop has focus, it just highlights one of my desktop icons. However, Windowskey+f does bring up my Vista search.

I did uninstall Google Desktop and I think maybe my laptop is using less power idle. I uninstalled a couple of other things too, but I think maybe the indexing running all the time uses some processing power.
