Do you run dual monitors? If so, how do you have them setup?

I'm looking into getting a second monitor in the future. I'm toying with the idea of getting a Mac Pro and running OS X on one screen and XP on the other (via Parallels). If you have or had dual monitors, how did you have them setup? Do you have a main one that you sit in front of with one off to the side, or do you have them side-by-side, directly in front of you? Or some other setup?

I run one in front and one to the side. I like it when I am doing some big time web surfing other then that its kinda useless to me.

Yeah. I'm looking at getting a 24" LCD for the main one, but I don't know if I'd want a 24" LCD for the second one or not. What sizes do you have?

I have a 18" and a 20" widescreen LCD. They run independently of each other.

A couple 20" LCDs, I sit slightly to the left of center and use the left one mostly with smaller windows / winamp / IM on the right one.

Any wider than this and I'd have to start moving my neck = :(

EDIT: my roommate used to run OSX from his G5 on one 20" with XP running on his second 20". I forget the name, but he had a program that allowed him to move his mouse between the monitors as if they were the same computer. He got sick of it though as he got sick of not being able to really drag anything across or use the space effectively.

EDIT2: Gave me a reason to clean off my Desk

Over and under. Bottom is my main work area, top is for chat and reference. I'd rather do side by side, but don't have the desk space.

I have two 19inch CRT monitors, lol. My desk has a nice bow in the middle. I use the left one mainly, because it is newer. I use the right one when playing games to have teamspeak/aim/webpages. I would never go back to a single screen.

http://synergy2.sourceforge.net/ <--- Is that the program your friend used?

"Synergy lets you easily share a single mouse and keyboard between multiple computers with different operating systems, each with its own display, without special hardware. It's intended for users with multiple computers on their desk since each system uses its own monitor(s)."

Probably. :)

He said the only problem he had with it's functionality is that the copy / paste didn't work very well.

I have 2 identical lcds that are rotated 90 degrees that are side by side. They take up as much space as a monster CRT, and are great for coding, reading on the web, etc. That layout sucks for things like watching movies or playing games, but that's my development machine so it isn't as much of a concern for me. It obviously wouldn't work for everyone, but depending on what you spend most of your time doing, this can be a great way to set up your monitors.

I used to have pictures floating about somewhere, but I can't find them....

2 21" CRTs and a portrait mode 24" LCD here. Center CRT has code. Left CRT has console output, unit tests, package explorer, etc.. LCD on right has reference material like API docs, web browsers, etc..

Two side by side 19" LCDs. They are pretty useful when I have a lot of work, but usually I have iTunes/AIM running in one, and other crap in the other.

2 20.1 widescreen, sometimes I use them both to span docs across the screens, sometimes I work in one and watch a movie in the other, sometimes I run xbox on one, and sometimes they are off.

I've got two 19 inchers. Just like the other guy, I sit slightly to the left, so one is more "main" than the other. One usually has a full screen web browser, movie or game. The other is IM, skype, winamp etc...basically everything else.

I could never go back to a single monitor.
