Do you ride your bike in the street?

If so, do you ride in the middle of the lane? I heard hugging the shoulder is bad because cars might not see you, and plus someone in a parked car might open their door and you ride right into it. I just started riding mine to get to the gym and I almost collided into someone's door just like this. Luckily I was going slow in order to giv emyself enough time to react just in that type of situation, but I still barely had time.

So i switch between street and sidewalk now, riding on the sidewalk if it'sempty, and te street if there's enough space to not get hit by cars.

I ride my bike on the street every day. I ride in the middle of the lane in narrow lanes where there's not enough room for both a car and a bike to be comfortably side-by-side and still both be safe. I could take pictures of traffic situations and where I ride in those situations, but that'd require work.

Typically, I ride about 4-5 feet to the left of whatever obstacles there are on the right of me. If that puts me in the middle of the lane, then that's where I ride.

I ride close to the shoulder, but the only time I'm in the street is the 6 blocks through residential streets it takes to get to the bike trail, so it's sort of a moot point.
