Do you respond to compliment emails at work?

Lets say something happened, or a job was completed, or whatever and your boss' boss whom you rarely see sends you an email complimenting you/thanking you for a job well done.

what's the proper etiquette? Do you file the email away and consider the day to be a good one, or do you respond back with a thank you for the thank you?

edit: and the relationship is at the point where you dont know him well enough to joke about getting a raise
