Yes, and I am Asian.

The other thing is, with your feet in your shoes the whole day, your feet feel tired, so you might as well take them off while you can.

And yes, it's a matter of respect, but also a matter of cleanliness.

i don't enforce the shoes off policy at both of my houses. but i do have tons of slippers imported from Japan.

of course. its disgusting. shoes go through muck like public restrooms etc..and you want to track that back home? unless you've actually got a smear of poop on your sole of course its not visible.

home is where you should be able to treat the ground as clean, sit down on the floor and whatever without worrying about it being dirty as the bottom of a shoe.

Not asian, but I would prefer if they took their shoes off because most of the carpeting in the living room and dining room is white.

i do prefer that they do (non asian aussie here), and most people do as a matter of courtesy anyway...

i certainly always do (but then i'm usually wearing thongs so it's no hassle for me).

Quick translation.

What you call flip-flops we Aussies for many years have called thongs

But then again, after reading some of dug777's other post's, he could be wearing a thong in addition to his thongs.

yes and asian.
although it is known to be "an asian thing to do", it simply makes more sense for cleanness and foot health.
i remember someone used to make a mock thread on chopsticks calling them 'archaic and outdated'. well, there ya go! you may have used to walk around with shoes on in caves and huts, but we tend to put a little more emphasis on sanitary level as we move up to more advanced type of housing :p

That's because they get body oil from their feet all over the carpet

No, I do it (UK) and I'm not Asian.
I vaccuum a couple of times a week and I'm buggered if I'm going to allow people to trample dirt into the carpets.

Honestly though, just take your fu cking shoes off when you come inside, leave them by the door. Honestly, it's not being anal, it's just being a little bit fu cking clean.

It mainly had to do with having tatami and other mat type flooring...shoes will break the fibers.

A lot of times here is a combination of culture, desire to be clean, and more often owning things beyond one's means. I don't see it so much now, but growing up it would suck to spend time at friend's homes where everything is covered, there are vinyl pathways you can only walk on (in socks even), etc..

I like to enjoy my things. I usually take my own shoes off in my house, but don't require others. I do mostly go with tile in the general areas and carpeting in the bedrooms only.

Carpet in an of itself is something that many don't keep clean.

No, but I usually take my shoes off when entering my house. I just don't like wearing shoes quite honestly so I just take them off whenever I don't need to wear them.

<--Not Asian.

I do, I'm AZN (iight) and my floors are spankin clean. I have vintage hardwood floors and a nice ABC carpet in the living room in front of the fireplace and french windows. No one walks in with their shoes on or else I cut their head off with my blade. My gf and I clean 4x a week too.
