this was my favorite game about 10 years ago. I played it on my 386 40mhz 8mb ram 250mb hard drive computer with a basic 'flightstick' joystick.

I actually sketched out my own map of all the quadrants containing all the systems and planets.

I made a lot of 'credits' selling contraband goods and doing illegal missions, which led to beating the game.

I played and beat privateer 2 as well, but i still favor the original game.

What ever happened to origin?

I have that game on cd-rom, along with Righteous Fire expansion pack. If you liked Privateer you might like Freelancer as well, although it's not as good as the original IMHO. Never liked Privateer 2 much.

Origin was bought by EA, EA drove it into the ground by driving away designers like Chris Roberts then eventually stopping development on everything except the Ultima Online v1 cash cow -- they even cancelled UO2 which gave Sony the perfect opening to come in and clobber them with EverQuest.

EA = bean-counting shortsighted idiots.

Privateer was such a great game. Freelancer is similar but trading is considerably more tedious since there's no autopilot.

Origin was bought by EA before they even released Privateer.

Yup. Have the gold edition sitting in its box down at my parent's house.

Privateer was an awesome game. Privateer 2 was pretty good, but not quite as good as the first one, IMHO.

Privateer was so sweet...too bad Chris Roberts never made another game like it.

Oh man.. that and Wing Commander. I'm getting flashbacks of chasing those Cookie-shaped ships and waiting until they pulled up so I could shoot them in the soft, exposed cookie-shaped wing.

Awesome game. I own all of the original Wing Commander games except number 4. 2 was my favorite, then Privateer.

There was a freebie Wing Commander game that you could download. It was pretty cool because I just upgraded to an AGP mobo and the graphics were kick ass. It was a post-Kilrathi (spelling?) game with a completely alien race to battle. Anybody remember that or still have it?

My hard drive had gone belly up before I chance to burn it.

Yep, 2 was my favorite Wing Commander, too. After this they became too "movie" like and the game play suffered.

Apparently Privateer is now borderline Abandonware. It's available at a couple abandonware sites at the moment.

I loved Privateer. I wish they would remake it. I played Freelancer, but it wasn't the same.

Privateer was great! I didn't even know there was a story line until my friend told me. I was dissapointed by privateer 2, I hope they make a third one.

yeah, it wasn't nearly as open or as interesting... Privateer was my favorite game.... There was something so good about just doing whatever you pleased if you were bored.

I wasted soo much time on that game. I remember I used to be really bad at this game when I used the cargo ship.

I remember when I found wing commander II for 8 bucks at sams club.

I was so excited I got it and fired it up on my Pentium 133. It was so freakin fast that I died on the first level. The dralthis show up and fire at the speed of light and I'm dead in two seconds. That killed the experience pretty quick. I never did find a program that would slow down my PC enough to let me play it.
