Since they basically act as a filter for your air passages, I bet they get real dirty, Especially with allergy season. I have some sterile saline I could use (work in hospital) or if you don't, you could just wet some q tips with alcohol...

Be careful with those, I read those cause infections if not used properly

I use distilled water. I used tap water (from a private well) for years before I heard about that, with no problems. I think the few cases were from people using questionable water sources, like from a pond.

I read one tragic case that contracted those brain eating amoebas from tap water. I'd stick with distilled if I ever felt the need to use one.

As for the OP, I'll pick in private if I feel an obstruction. Beyond that no.

I pick the big boogers and save 'em for later. During the winter I usually get some big dried blood boogers from breathing forced hot air, those are usually the chewiest.
