Do you refrigerate things like Mayonnaise before you open them?

I know that Mayo and other things are ok to store unopened at room temperature. However, I always put mayo and other things in the fridge before I open them, in the belief that if I open them warm and then refrigerate them, the time it takes for the product to cool down will shorten its usable life after opening.
Anyone else pre-refrigerate?

I put things like that in the fridge after getting back from the grocery store.

I don't put them in the fridge until I have to. I'll take things like ketchup, BBQ sauce, sour cream, etc. out well before it's time to use them because they taste better warm.

I put them in the fridge right after I buy them, but if I'm making a sandwich right then and there, room temp mayo won't stop me.

Not usually, but I don't have a lot of cupboard space so often will put those items in the fridge anyway.

I don't really buy things in bulk... when I run out of mayo, I'll take the jar from the fridge, toss it in the recycling, go buy a new jar, and put it where the old one was.

This, except I hate mayo. Same principal applies for mustard though.

I prefer salsa to be cold though, so I'll usually wait for salsa to chill before opening it.

I agree (again, in principal.. I hate mayo) I don't buy these things in huge quantities. When I run out, the new jar goes in the same spot in the fridge as the old.

Geez, guys, don't you read the instructions? Refrigerate AFTER opening. By inference, that means DO NOT refrigerate before opening. If they wanted you to refrigerate before opening, it would say so. Right there. On the label.

I always follow the instructions on the package. I shudder to think what would happen if I didn't.

Commercial Mayo is SAFE to use after it warms up. DO put it in the fridge. Do NOT throw out something with commercial mayo because it sat out a little while. The Mayo that is dangerous is homemade mayo where the eggs can be undercooked or raw AND there is not enough acid in the mayo to prevent baterial growth.

Depends really.

If I just went to the store and got a ketchup or mayo to replace what I was out of then I would just put it in the fridge since that's where I'd go to look for it when I needed it next anyway.

If I went to Costco and was just stocking up on stuff I go through on a regular basis like ketchup then I'd just put it in the pantry if I already had a open one with some life left in it in the fridge.

I put them in the fridge before I open them, but not for any real reason. That is just where the mayo goes. I don't want to over complicate things by separating this mayo from that when there's plenty of room in the fridge.

Who has mayo left after opening? It's so tasty that I eat the whole jar immediately, every time. Yum!

I never have.

Start your own thread :p

Besides, my wife does.

Weird, mine too. I brought it up one day, and said it wasn't necessary. She retaliated with the very valid point that I didn't eat it anyway, so why do I care where it's kept.
So now it still goes in the fridge.
