Do you recommend Win 2000 for a P1 MMX 300 MHz machine?

Hi. I am wondering whether it would be a good idea to install Windows 2000 Professional on the following machine:

PI 300 MHz w MMX
256 MB SD-RAM
4.2 GB Hard-drive
24x CD-ROM
Integrated video

The machine currently has Windows 98 installed on it. I am wondering if I can get reasonable performance (not much system lag) with Windows 2000 on it. If so, I can use a win 2000/xp compatible wireless card on it =)

Thanks for your inputs!

I think that you should be fine with this machine. I ran Win2k just fine on a Celeron 400 with 128MB RAM.

I have XP Pro on my Celeron 300 with 256 or maybe 384 megs of RAM. Works great as long as I don't try to do too much at once.

Thank you for your help!

I am just wondering whether the performance would actually be more stable than win 98 or would I suffer a performance loss?

Thanks!

you won't notice any performance loss with win2k. I always recommend win2k for older PCs and the only reason you would want to install win98 is a very old application.

Thank you for such recommendation! I would definitely upgrade then =)
Thanks.

I didn't think the Pentium I chip went up past 233 MHz. It's probably a p2. It should run it ok.

Yeah I have a p1 233....intel made 233mhz for both p1 and p2.

They didn't however make any Pentium I 300 mhz chips. They went up to 266 and then it was Celeron, PII, or PPro.

I would run it on 98. However it should be OK if you turn off all the themes, and appearances and stuff 2K has.

Hi. I do not think it is a celeron or PII. It is a laptop, but I am not familiar with laptop processors back then.

So using Win 98 would actually be faster than using win 2000?

Win98 would be faster at some things, Win2k would be faster at others. Overall, the differences in performance will be negligible. The difference in stability will be tilted strongly in favor of Win2k.

He's right, Intel did make some faster Pentium chips for laptops. I had a Dell Latitude CPi with a Pentium 366, not a Pentium II.

That would be a P2, they did make Pentium MMX's up to 300 MHz for mobile applications though.

And yes, with 256 MB of RAM it would run fine, if a bit slow.
The big problem with older computers tend to be that they have 64 or 128 MB of RAM.
