Do you really need ATI CONTROL PANEL?

I have a 9800 Pro 256mb and I uninstalled ati control panel and ati drivers, restarted, and let windows install the drivers. It seems that the driver number is somewhat recent, maybe even 3.6. Says driver version: 6.14.10.6360.

ANYWAYS, i didnt install ati control panel because I wasnt sure which one I could install for this driver. The 3.5s seem to have a lower driver number. ANYWAYS, the windows installed drivers fixed my issue, what should I do? Is this hurting my performance?

bump! Do I need ATI Control panel to squeek out max performance or no?
i'm running at 1200x1024 max in games bc I have an LCD so I dont really max out the card, but this might affect something?

It`s needed for gaming since as the other members have said it lets you adjust D3D/OpenGL settings,AA.AF and few other stuff as well.

As to which Control panel, just download the CATs 3.6 drivers (File size: 6.52 MB Posted: July 15, 2003
Version: 6.14.10.6368 Packaging Version: 7-91-030625a-010027c ) and Control Panel(File size: 5.20 MB Posted: July 15, 2003 Version: 6.14.10.5021 ).

Yep, I couldn't stand not having my control pannel (and IMO it's light years better than nvidia's control pannel).

Now i installed ATI Control panel for 3.6, although I have 3.5 drivers...
I was looking at the options in the advanced settings tab, and I changed the OpenGL and D3D settings to 16x 6x for AAF and AA for everything and not just application preferance or whatever. Anyone know if this will improve graphics or slow me down?

It will do both make it look better and slow you down, the key is balance try different settings to gain the best looking and best performing you can get.

If you start dropping FPS too low then back the settings down or try a different resolution, I run mine with 4xAA and 8x AF depending on the game either 1280 or 1600 resolution.

well i run at 1280x1024...and my CPU = 3.0p4 w/ 800 fsb, 1024mb pc3200, 256mb radeon, audigy 2....so I think i'll run at a good framerate with any game i play?

If it doesn't, there's something SERIOUSLY wrong with your drivers....

If the game is programed right you should run most games very well. My system is just a little below yours in terms of CPU 2.8C for me and video card 9700 Pro here.

My old system ran NOLF2 like a dream at 1600 res with the goodies turned on, and it was a 2.0 at 2.3 115 fsb.

Now I play Planetside everyday and it does drop to very low FPS in certain areas and thats due to the game itself not my system.
