Do you really need an Orb for your cpu?...

Ok, the idea of those Orbs is great and the design is too. I was wondering if you buy a retail 800E let's say it comes with a heatsink and fan, isn't that enough? When you buy a retail cpu you expect that, that will be enough.
Your cpu shouldn't blow up or burn out without one of those, right?
You buy a retail and it should go to the warranty no probs.

...lol, ok so what i'm saying is, is this whole cooling thing just cause you think you'll need it? OR are you so paranoid that you just think your system is going to overheat, when have you heard of a system overheating bty?

One more ?.
What is the difference between the chrome and golden orbs? (besides the obvious).

If you're going to overclock it then yes, you will need the extra cooling, if not, then no, it's not really necessary. Yes, it will burn out if it gets too hot. Yes, if you don't mess with the chip at all it will run fine.

Yes, I know it's needed. No, I'm not paranoid, and I'm sure (most) everyone else here isn't either. And yes, I have heard about allot of heat related problems some people have had.

The difference between the chrome and the golden orb, besides the obvious, is the chrome orb is specifically for socket A, and the golden orb is for everything (including the socket A, though it sucks).

Why does the Gorb suck?
I don't need anything like those ridiculous Alpha coolers.

How far do you think I might be able to get an 800E w/Abit BE6 128mb pc-100 up to?
What else besides an Alpha would be sufficient?

The chrome Orb is just a normal Orb without the gold coloring, as AMD specs their heatsinks as "uncoated". It has the addition of a plate on the bottom to provide stability with the socket A processor spacers as well, but otherwise is the same basic design as the first gerneration of Orbs.

As for cooling, the retail heatsink is adequate for normal use, and even moderate overclocking (I am talking PIIIs here, not socket As). But if you are getting kooky fast, you need more.

Ok, thnx I don't want to have to drop $50 (CDN) for just some illusionary reason. If the hs/f it comes with is adequate so be it.
Some ppl already have the idea you have to buy alpha coolers, etc cause they have a fast cpu.

Thanks again,

I use a gorb on both a P3 and C2 that are overclocked and find they don't perform a great deal better than the stock fans. I went from 33c under load to 29-30 on the P3 and from 27c to about 24 on the C2.

The gorbs look nice, are relatively quiet and don't impinge on anything else on the mb. The alpha's are for squeezing the last little bit out of a cpu that the other peripherals aren't holding back and are a bit of a status symbol. The gorbs are a beautifully engineered design but are a bit of a fad. I got mine from the states 3 months ago cause I couldn't find any up here and now everyone has them.

I didn't say the gorbs suck, I said they suck for the socket A. You can easily kill your CPU with one, but there's an easy way to fix it if you know how.V

the chrome orb on socket A also is far outclassed by other heatsinks, including the very cheap vantec blue one.

How far overclocked do you think I could get an 800E to? (on Egay auction)
retail cpu.

I think you could easily get to 1gig. If it were a t-bird or duron it could, but I don't know how well PIIIs OC.
