Do you really need a PSU fan?

Say you have a 300 watt PSU. Can you just rip out the fan? Does the PSU need it? Or does the case itself need it more?

In most power supplies, the fan is there mainly to cool the power supply. Its case cooling benefits are usually minimal. THere are exceptions.

I would say that you need the fan in there. If noise is a concern, you could always try a quieter fan. But a fan is better than no fan since power supply components do run hot.

Yes you do need a psu fan!!! especialy on a 300 watt with any kind of a load. I recently replaced a 145 watt psu because the fan went out and the psu destroyed itself. Componets heated up, expanded, and eventualy poped open. neet looking. :) like mike said. if noise is a concern, get a quieter fan. or if you feel you need a case fan....then just spend about 10 bucks and buy one. cheep ones work for a while. they just teend to be noiser and some don't move as much air as expensive ones do.

Absolutely. The components the the PSU get very hot. They will melt without a fan.
