Do you really need a fan on your motherboard heatsink?

This is the second time the fan has broke on my Abit ic7-g motherboard and i dont feel like trying to rma it again, plus i think the warranty might be up. The stupid little fan started making this loud noise then just stopped spinning. I can get it to start up for a while by giving it a spin manually but it just starts making the loud noise again and stops again a few days later.

Anyways i dont have any problems when its not spinning, nothing overheats, all the temps are fine, nothing locks up, but im curious if this could have long term effects and whether i ought to look into getting it replaced.

Take it off, peel the sticker on the underside and slip a bit of grease in. Or consider a silent fanless heatsink instead, quietpc.com for example.

I reckon the dinky HS with fan is cheaper than an adequate sized HS plus it gives the illusion of "high performance". Unless it is incredibly dinky it will prolly work sans fan, especially given 'nuff airflow (from CPU cooler, perhaps), however a larger one would be ideal, especially if o'erclocking.

If you're talking the northbridge cooler - the fans on Abit's are total crap You used to be able to get replacement parts for Abit from xcaliberPC.com and they only gave a 30-day warranty with those fans. Did they know they were crap or what...
. As others said get a Zalman or other passive heatsink from svc.com, jab-tech.com, et al.

Im really wondering why they would put such a pos fan on their flagship motherboard. I mean would it have killed them to spend an extra 5 cents and put one on that lasts more than 6 months?

i agree, but i think they do it just to save every penny they can, and because review sites don't do a fan test or review it long enough to have the fan crap out on them

hmmm, one problem is I have a giant zalman cpu heatsink, so not sure if any of those custom heatsinks will work. They look rather bulky.
