Seeing as how I mostly just use the PC's at home to play games and many other things live in the web browser and cloud:

Most games are launched from their own service now (Origin, Steam, Battle.net Launcher) and those have desktop shortcuts.

File explorer is pinned to the task bar, everything is else is found with search.

8.1 right click "start-button light" menu has not been horrible.

i love the right click menu. id put it on windows 7 pcs at work if i could.

dont miss the start menu, never used it much except to hit win + search term, so using that in 8 is about the same

using the desktop is silly. id have to minimize everything to see it. i just pin all my regularly used programs to the taskbar and im good to go. i mostly like 8.1, though i am looking forward to the updating coming down that adds a few more interface tweaks.
