do you really have to wait 72 hours before powering up a new thermal paste bond

Not at all. I think what they are saying is that after 72 hours the bond will be most effective. After a couple days the particles shift around and seat themselves better. The temp may go down 1 or 2 degrees.

Don't worry about it. Just spread it, mount it, and fire it up. Taking care to follow the instructions of course

Yep, csaddict is right. No need to wait to run the rig, just that after a few days of heat the silver particles settle and thus do a better job of transfering heat.

yeah, didn't have any ill effect on mine, two minutes after applying i was up and running(and boy did it help!!! 55C down to 30C) i dont' think i could stand being off of my system for 72 hours....
