Do you really care that two grandpas hooked up a "beam" in space today?

Well.

I would much rather see younger men/women (and, by the way, where were the grandmas?) working in space so that we would have experienced people carrying on the space program.

Sarcasm? Why would younger equate to more experienced?
BTW, unless one of them were my grandpa, I don't really care that much. ;)

What have you got against grandpas, youngster?:disgust:

If you want more youthful people in the program, volenteer. For most, the learning curve is so steep, you would probably be a grandpa yourself by the time you learned enough to do a job this important in space.

Oh your question isn't really as maddening as it seemed from the title. I thought you were asking whether we cared about the project at all. So, to answer your question, no, I don't really care that it was two grampas, but I think that this is the best news in a long time. The space project, in general, represents the best aspirations of humanity, and even though it's screwed up sometimes by bureaucracy and whatnot, it's still something worth getting excited about when the world is so full of doom and gloom all of the time. It's nice to see some real progress made, some real barriers shattered, some real knowledge gained. This trip accomplished something that 1) literally has never been done before and 2) has tremendous positive implications for the future. And the barriers were not human-imposed - rather, this was humans triumphing over nature, not over themselves. Again, NASA is far from perfect, but when they do something, no matter how seemingly minor, I take it as a very positive thing.

Tripleshot, I was in the RVN 1968-69 for Tet. I know Quang Tri province, not to mention Dong Ha, Cua Viet and Khon Thien. I remember living through seiges that you have only, possibly, read about.

Back to the topic, my point is that why are we sending "grandpas" up there at the cost of millions of dollars when they will never be able to make a return flight and utilize their experience.

I, of all people, would never denigrate the knowledge, experience and ability of "elderly citizens".

But, why are we sending old farts up there rather than young people who can make multiple flights so that we can utilize their experience?

There are grandpa's up there for the same reason NASA had to use a stinking BALLOON to land a space craft not long ago. The budget dosent allow for screwup's these days since space stuff dosent seem to be "in" anymore. If you want younger people up there it will require more $$$, and the government isnt likely to hand it over being that nobody cries about it anymore. That has pissed me off for a long time, and eventually when some private industry or other country is sudenly more prominant and advanced in space than the US, then people will yell and cry about it. S.O.S.
