Premise 1: 100,000,000,000 stars/galaxy and 100,000,000,000 galaxies/universe.

Premise 2: 100 in every 100 billion stars (1 / 1,000,000,000) supports a planet that supports life

Conclusion: 10 trillion planets that support life throughout the universe.

unless everything we percieve as reality is JUST a matrix. :) and all those "stars" are just figments of our imagination.

The real point is that we just don't care.

If they show up, then I might care.

If they show up, hold some of them captive for me so I can interrogate them on their ferengi ways.

not impossible, just improbable. that's what makes seti so intriguing. either answer, as long as we arrive at one, is equally amazing.

Just because they support life doesn't mean that life exists there. The chance that you find a planet that could support life is MUCH more than finding a planet that actually has life.

The chances that the right elements were in the right place at the right time to create earth's first life form are probably very small.

Premise 2 describes 1/1000000000 chance of a planet supporting life. The chance a planet could support life is, by this premise, higher.

And.... if there is 1/1,000,000,000 chance for a life supporting planet to actually support life, thats still 10,000 planets with life on em.... but considering the size of the universe.... tha chance we meet one of em.... close to 0....

Premises are unsupported. Conclusion unsupported. And turning the conclusion into another premise to lend support for the actual existence of life on another planet is unsupported.

Xirtam: My point it that it is logical to assume the presense of life on others planets...somewhere. Sure, i'm pulling numbers out of my ass but the conclusion still amazed me at least.

Samgau: Well i suppose there's a lot more to consider, but for the most part i'm sure you're right.

Do You Realize - that you have the most beautiful face
Do You Realize - we're floating in space
Do You Realize - that happiness makes you cry
Do You Realize - that everyone you know someday
will die

And instead of saying all of your goodbyes - let them know
You realize that life goes fast
It's hard to make the good things last
You realize the sun don't go down
It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round

Do You Realize - Oh - Oh - Oh
Do You Realize - that everyone you know
Someday
will die

And instead of saying all of your goodbyes - let them know
You realize that life goes fast
It's hard to make the good things last
You realize the sun don't go down
It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round

Do You Realize

All of y'all won't be laughing it up when you're stuck in a slave camp on Zanamoduff XII mining salt.

Fool. Everyone knows Zanamoduff XII's only viable commercial commodity are it's vast number of SLERM refineries.

I'm not trying to be flame bait here, but...

I think the major debate against the possibility of life somewhere else exists because if life did happen somewhere else, it causes a major problem with many religions.

The likelyhood of life on other planets is quite high, but the likelyhood of life existing in the same time span on two places close enough to make contact is very, very, very low. We're not going to last forever.
